ASCENSION
And if I go,
While you’re still here
Know that I live on,
Vibrating to a different measure
behind a thin veil you cannot see through.
You will not see me,
So you must have faith.
I wait for the time when we can soar together again,
both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to its fullest,
And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart,
…I will be there.

For Lieutenant Eric Shuhandler:
Hardly any situation is riskier that the interception of a vehicle by the law officer on patrol. Unknown is the occupant's past misdeeds. Inside can be a wanted felon. Only minutes before having committed a heinous crime. They can attack the officer leaving him/her to die; the vehicle and occupants then speeding away.
Those who would attack a law officer should know that all law officers alerted will respond to join the hunt. We will do before all else. We have done it before. We did it for Eric. We will do it again. Forever.
We pray for Eric's family, friends, co-workers and all who care about him. We pray they bring aid and comfort to all who grieve. May they each remember Eric for the light that he brought into their life.
I am proud to render Lieutenant Eric Shuhandler a final salute.

Eric,
Words can't begin to express the sadness and devastation felt in this senseless and cowardly act. I'll never forget you, your work ethic and your constant practical jokes. I am proud to call you my friend and I'll miss you terribly. We will meet again, my friend, and we'll keep working as I know you would have us do. The Gilbert Police Department will never be the same without you.

A PART OF AMERICA DIED....
Somebody killed a policeman today .... And a part of America died…. A piece of our country he swore to protect .... Will be buried with him at his side.... The beat that he walked was a battlefield too,.... Just as if he had gone off to war, .... Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast .... To his name they will add a gold star.... The suspect that shot him will stand up in court .... With counsel demanding his rights,.... While a young widowed mother must work for her kids .... And spend many long, lonely nights... .. Yes, somebody killed a policeman today…. Maybe in your town or mine,.... While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors.... A cop put his life on the line.... Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street, .... And he stands at each new rookie's side; .... He answered the call… of himself gave his all,....
And a part of America died.
