I will remember those days when you and Ricky would come into radio. The great team is now in heaven looking down on us. Please protect the others and watch over them as they patrol the streets. You are now with the others who have been taken away from us so soon. My heart goes out to your family and fellow members of Mishawaka Police. You and Ricky made us proud and it was an honor to know and work with you. Thank you for all you gave.

Caporal James J. Szuba and K9 Ricky

I watched your funeral procession yesterday as your fellow officers honored you and Ricky for the ultimate price of service you have paid. Thank you for your decision to follow the foot steps of your father and brother in law enforcement. Your work here has been deeply appreciated. I am sure your father and MPD brothers Tom, Bryan and Jerry have welcomed you. God Bless your family and the MPD family. R.I.P.

Jim.

I have been struggling with the right things to say. Sorry to say, I still am at a loss.

It seems every time we would run into each other you would greet me the same way: "Steve Headley, how the hell are ya, mister?" (hopefully that gets through ODMP's filters). I will always remember the softball games. Even though our team really was pretty bad, we had a good time.

The very first patrol rifle school that you taught, which I was fortunate to be a part of, is probably the best training class I have ever attended. I kinda felt bad for you and Jason and V, because you had quite the crew of smart alecks to deal with. The Irish Boy and I were just talking about that school recently. One of the best weeks, ever. He and I each put a Polish flag on the car out front of station for you. Losdupas forever!

Now, too, of course, because of our mutual aprreciation of it, I will always think of you when I grab a bottle of our favorite bourbon, Woodford Reserve. I could go on and on.

I will miss you, brother.

My heart aches everytime I hear of the passing of a police officer in the line of duty. Cpl. Szuba, you are owed much gratitude and respect for answering the call to serve and protect. Ricky, you stood by your partner and protected those in your community. To the Szuba family, know that you are forever in my heart and my prayers. Thank you for allowing your loved ones to protect a community that was made better by their presence. Your loss is felt by many. God Bless.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Corporal Szuba and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Corporal Szuba, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Corporal Szuba is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family, and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.
