Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Josie Greathouse Fox

Your selfless devotion to duty, with honor, will never be forgotten. A special prayer to your family and fellow officers who must miss you dearly.

"In the simple performance of duty,
She pinned on a badge,
Checked her gear with a practiced eye,
And kissed her loved ones good-bye.
In the simple performance of duty,
She answered the call
to help the helpless, to find the lost,
No matter the danger or how great the cost.
In the simple performance of duty,
She lay down her life,
for those in peril she tried to save,
Our brave friend went to her grave.
In the simple performance of duty,
we honor her deed,
as we carry her to rest in a flag-draped casket,
long after the world has forgotten, we shall never forget.
Never judge or regret, what she did, In the simple performance of Duty."

You made the ultimate sacrifice. You gave your life for someone. Your family has always known your strength and bravery and now the world knows. You are a beautiful hero. I hope your family finds peace. It's so hard to understand why this had to happen to you. You will be in the hearts and minds of all those you have touched.

Peace be with your family

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Fox and we honor her distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Fox, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with her when she walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that she will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Deputy Fox is a woman distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for her brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family, and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

A POLICEMAN'S PRAYER
BROTHER WHEN YOU WEEP FOR ME REMEMBER THAT IT WAS MEANT TO BE.
LAY ME DOWN AND WHEN YOU LEAVE REMEMBER I'LL BE AT YOUR SIDE...IN EVERY DARK AND DREARY ALLEY I'LL BE THERE AS YOU SLOWLY TREAD, ON EVERY STREET CORNER IN THE DRIVING SNOW I'LL HOLD YOUR COAT AND YOU WILL KNOW.
IN PLACES WHERE THE DEVIL IS AFRAID TO WALK...
AT DOORS WHERE YOU MEET RESISTANCE...
IN HOUSES WHERE CHILDREN HIDE...
YOU KNOW I'LL BE AT YOUR SIDE.
THE PLACE FROM WHICH I NOW RESPOND IS OVERSTAFFED WITH HEROES GONE...MEN WHO ANSWERED ONE LAST JOB AND DID IT WELL.
AS POLICEMEN WE UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A CARD DEALT IN OUR HAND...A CARD WE HOPE WE NEVER PLAY BUT WE HOLD IT THERE ANYWAY.
THE CARD IS SOMETHING WE IGNORE AS WE STAND ON THAT THIN BLUE LINE EVERY TOUR...FOR WE KNOW THAT WE ARE THE ONLY PRAYER FOR MANY OUT THERE.
SO REMEMBER, AS YOU WIPE YOUR TEARS, THE JOY I HAVE KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE YEARS...AS THE JOB I LOVED TO DO I PRAY THAT THIS THOUGHT WILL SEE YOU THROUGH.
To your family my prayers are with you.

To the Family of Depty Sheriff Josie Greathouse Fox,

I am so very sorry for the loss of your daughter, mom and wife. Please know that others are praying for your family and our hearts are breaking for you.
Your daughter, wife and mom, made a difference in this world. She is a TRUE HERO, and kids, you can be proud of your mom the rest of your life. She made a difference every day she put on that uniform and went to work. The world is a better place because she was in it. Josie is a beautiful woman, who looks like she loved being a sheriff and she will be remembered forever.

Sincerely a sister officer,
Charlene Genther

For Deputy Sheriff Josie Greathouse Fox:

Our duty as law officers is to take-on assignments that involve great risk. Hardly any is greater than the interception of a vehicle containing a suspected felon. It is the officer who incurs all the risk as he/she makes the approach to the vehicle. The occupant(s) will take down an officer by surprise and then flee the scene without compunction. Josie stands among all those who have faced this situation bravely, courageously and without shrinking from duty. Despite precaution, it cost her her life.

We pray for Josie, her family, friends, co-workers and all who care about her. May each of them extend the sympathy and support to one another at the appropriate moments. A hero has left us. At the same time, a hero arrives among heros in eternity. May our Creator look upon them as the heros-of-yesterday embrace Josie and take her into their midst. No more valiant a hero has preceeded her.

As a retired state trooper and Lake County (FL) deputy sheriff I am proud to render Deputy Josie Fox a final salute.

Cpl. Ralph D. Fiorenza (Ret.)
Pennsylvania State Police

May God wrap his loving arms around your family & friends and carry them through the difficulty (and often lonely)days ahead of them. You were a brave lady doing a job not many men will do (not to mention young women). When I was in my 20's I was a LEO also so I know some of the challenges you faced. Thanks for your bravery & service! I hope your family finds peace one day in their memories of you.

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To the family of Deputy Fox and the Millard County Utah Sheriffs Office, please know that thousands of law enforcement officers around the country and the world mourn your loss. May your memories of your wife and mother and this brave Deputy sustain you, and may your faith renew your strength. It is not in the way she died that made her a hero, but the way she lived.
