To the Family and friends of Special Deputy United States Marshal Stan Cooper,

Monday we buried a friend. Stan Cooper was a retired LVMPD officer who had a retirement job at the U.S. Courthouse here in Las Vegas. He started in 1994 as a CSO, and I met and worked with him until my retirement in 2003. Several of my agency retirees work as CSO's in Las Vegas.

A week ago Monday at 8AM a man who hated police officers, and was angry at the Social Security Administration, entered the Courthouse Lobby, and without warning fired three shotgun blasts into the lobby aiming at the CSO's at the security station. Stan got off one shot before he was hit, and killed instantly. The other CSO, a retiree from my agency, and a 26 year friend, took cover and returned fire, driving the killer back out of the lobby.

Returning fire several times, he kept the killer out of the courthouse, until backup arrived. Those officers had a gun battle that resulted in the death of the killer, and the wounding of a Deputy United States Marshal.

The Marshal is recovering.

Stan was asked many times why he didn't retire from the Courthouse, and his reply was that he was a lawman, and that's what he did. And that the job would probably kill him.

Stan was one of the nicest men I've ever known.

I wanted you all to know that I am very proud of these "retiree's" who at 72 get off a shot while dying, and engage in a gun battle to protect their charges.

We do have hero's to look up to, and they put their lives on the line every day, on the battlefield, at the Courthouse, our police, sheriff, and state police, in our National Parks, at our Malls, in our fire departments, and emergency medical personnel. Most are active duty, but more and more are retirees. Since 9/11 retirees have joined auxiliary police, and Homeland Security Units run by local PD's and funded by the Department of Homeland Security. Under the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 qualified retired law enforcement officers are authorized by Congress to carry a concealed weapon in their home state, and in all other states, and territories of the US. These are our national police reserves.

In 2010 let's remember them. They stand between Good and Evil. They run toward the gunfire, when all others run away from it. They run to protect those who need it. They run into the burning building because people are in need of help. They can be seen at auto accidents and other disasters treating the injured, sick, and dying. And even when they retire, they are there for us.

Keep them in your thoughts this week, and pray for them. They deserve it, and when you need them they come a runnin'. There is Evil in the world, and they are the front line. Let's not let the Evil win.

Thank You All for listening. And those of you who are hero's, know that I am praying for you tonight, and every night.

Thank You,

Southern Nevada will be forever indebted to Special Deputy Marshall Cooper for his courage, character, sacrifice and honor in and outside the line of duty. As a Las Vegas resident, I enjoy and value my freedom and security, but try never to take it for granted given its steep cost. Special Deputy Marshall Cooper helped pay it by writing the people of Clark County, the City of Las Vegas, the State of Nevada and the United States of America a check in the amount of "Up to and Including My Own Life". You bring honor to a grateful community and nation through your selfless sacrifice, Special Deputy Marshall Cooper. You will never be forgotten and my prayers, in Christ's name, go out to your family, friends and former colleagues during this difficult time. You will NEVER be forgotten!

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

For Special Deputy Marshal Stanley W. Cooper:

Our job as law officers is fraught with high risk from the day we first enter service to the public until the day after we retire. Having spent 42 years in law enforcement for Stan is indeed long and faithful service. It included the same risk since his first day with the Metropolitan Police in Las Vegas. Such is the risk to all of us who wear the badge.

We pray that Stan is none-the-less glad that he was able to serve the people of the greatest country on the face of the earth. I somehow feel certain that he would do it all over again if he had the opportunity. This includes a great many who died before him in the line-of-duty.

We pray for Stan, his family, friends, co-workers and all who cared about him. We are confident that each of them will be ready for support to one another at the appropriate moments. We are further confident that each of them reconize that Stan's proud service to the public is not even slightly diminished by the act of a crazed, irresponsible and wholely unrecognized individual with a grudge against the world. His act only proved Stan to be all the more a hero.

As a retired state trooper and a retired Lake County (FL) deputy sheriff I am proud to render Deputy Marshal Stan Cooper a hearty and final salute.
