Reflections for Officer Christopher Russell Marano

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To the family and friends of Officer Chris Marano and his fellow officers:

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Chris was tragically killed.

To Officer Marano's family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in the Bay Area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Chris gave to his community and the citizens of Arizona, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on December 17, 2009.

Officer Marano, may you rest in peace in the bosom of our Lord and Savior. My thoughts and prayers are with your wife and daughters.

Mrs. Marano, my husband died in the line of duty in a very very simular situation on 9-12-05. I know first hand the pain and trauma it causes, but even I can't know how you feel. Lean on Jesus for your comfort. Your husband is in His hands and so are you and your girls. Be blessed my sister.

Hey Bro,

Just had a minute while I sit here at work checking my email and wanted to stop by and say hi and Merry Christmas. The service the other day was beautiful dude; the turn out and out pouring of support from the community was awesome. Several of the Old Crew came out for Tuesday and Wednesday to be there for you and the family. It was great having everyone there for each other. God knows we needed the support. Well, I'm gonna get back to at least TRYING to look busy LOL. I miss you Bro, Rest Easy until we meet again.

1 Good people pass away;
the godly often die before their time.
But no one seems to care or wonder why.
No one seems to understand
that God is protecting them from the evil to come.
2 For those who follow godly paths
will rest in peace when they die.
