Charlie,

It was just a year ago this week that we were sitting eating lunch during PLI school. I'll never forget you telling how easy it was to buy drugs driving a Buick and the way you talked about your family. We had some good laughs.

The guys all got together last night to remember you. We told some stories, but there wasn't much laughter. I don't know your family, but I know that your work family misses you sorely.

I'll always remember you as one of the finest officers I've ever known and one of the nicest guys I've ever met. Although we never worked for the same department I knew my brother was safe with you and your team backing him up in Williamston.

It seems that every time I watched the news it was about your unit and the war on drugs in Martin County. Although they couldn't show your face or tell your name, I always knew you were behind the scenes doing what you loved.

We may be laying you to rest this weekend, but you're one of those guys who we will be telling stories about for years to come. We'll take it from here until we see you again. 1*

It is my honor to have had the opportunity to call Charlie one of my officers and--more importantly--a friend over the past three years. As an officer, he was one of the best I've run across in my career. As a man, he was one of the best I've run across in my life. I think about all the times he sat across the desk from me, and I can't remember a single time he didn't have a smile on his lips and a twinkle in his eye.

In a time when we all have so much confusion and so many questions, there are three things I know for sure. Charlie loved his family, he loved his job, and he loved goofy, sweet H2. Charlie knew how much it brightened my days when he brought that brown lump of love to see me, so he always brought him along when he came up to talk about his cases. And you could visible see Charlie swell up with pride when he talked about his daughters.

We are never going to be able to understand why or be able to fully recover from this loss. But we will carry on, doing what we can to keep Martin County safe. Charlie would have wanted nothing less.

You will be missed, my friend.
