Final Inspection
The Policeman stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, officer. How shall I deal with You?
Have you always turned the other cheek? To my Church have you been true?"

The officer squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Cause those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.

But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep,
Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me, I wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand.
I've never expected or had too much. But if you don't, I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the saints had often trod.
As the officer waited quietly for the answer of his God.

"Step forward now, Officer, you've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's Streets. You've done your time in Hell."

-Peter Hornbach

I was wounded in action 18Nov2004 in Fallujah, IRAQ and disabled from blast and shrapnel damage. Now I had to rely on others like Officer Griswold to watch my back. Thank you for holding the "Thin Blue Line" for of us no longer able to.

The policeman stood and faced his God,

He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place

I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

When I heard of this tragedy I felt the need to write. Not only was my husband ambushed and killed in the line of duty but he too was 37 yrs old and a PO for 12 yrs. His killer is still at large. Find peace in knowing that our officers are together smiling down on us even though our tears are still flowing. Don't cloud your mind with the hate and distress that humanly come natural to us for the events that occurred. I believe this was part of my Tom's journey and just as I supported him for doing what he loved to do, I will always support and pray for him for dying while doing what he loved to do. No one knows why these series of events happen, so I've learned to stop trying to figure it out. We have 5 beautiful children who miss and ache for his presence everyday but they've found so many positive things from his death that its impossible for us to be sad everyday. You too will find that happiness once you are no longer numb, don't rush it, just embrace the day you can look up and smile again...believe me, it will come. There is a lot of support out there for you. Support from families that yearn the need to belong to a group that understands the death of a police officer. Don't shut yourself off to this support, be strong and know we're in this together.
