"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

What a tragic, tragic incident. Know that there is a lasting hero status here for you. While the policing community will mourn for you, you can rest in knowing there are Brave, BRAVE men and women who courageously face the evils of this world and know that every day could be their last...and yet they STILL do it. You are to be honored, sir.

Heaven Was Needing A Hero
Performed by JoDee Messina

I came by today to see you
Oh I had to let you know
If I knew the last time that I held you was the last time
I'd have held you, and never let go

Oh, it's kept me awake nights, wondering
I lie in the dark, just asking why
I've always been told
You won't be called home
Until it's your time

I guess heaven was needing a hero
Somebody just like you
Brave enough to stand up
For what you believe
And follow it through
When I try to make it make sense in my mind
The only conclusion I come to
Is heaven was needing a hero
Like you

I remember the last time I saw you
Oh, you held your head up proud
I laughed inside
When I saw how you were standing out in the crowd
Your such a part of who I am
Now that part will just be void
No matter how much I need you now
Heaven needed you more

Cause heaven was needing a hero
Somebody just like you
Brave enough to stand up
For what you believe
And follow it through
When I try to make it make sense in my mind
The only conclusion I come to
Is heaven was needing a hero
Like you

Is Heaven was needing a hero
and that's you

Officer Owens and I conducted a ride along in mid 2008 before I deployed to Iraq. He was a very nice police officer, and person, who offered great advice and shared some of his experience with me. At the time I was trying to become a police officer and wanted to work in Lakewood but could not due to my active service in the military but Officer Owens showed me a side of law enforcement that I definitely look forward to. Thank you Officer Owens.....and may God bless you, your loved ones, and your fellow officers.

This truly sadens me and brings back many memories of the death of my mom. To your family: it will take true courage and strength to get past this great loss, but by God's grace and mercy, you will get thru it. Please remember to stay prayerful and know that God doesn't make mistakes. Officer Owens made the ultimate sacrifice doing something he truly loved...protecting and serving. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

My mind cannot get around this atrosity and the absolute act of horrible violence to these Heroes in blue. It is true your names are now forever on Officer Down Memorial never to be forgotten. I cannot fathom the depth of sorrow for the families of these great people. I know that these Heroes walk a new beat without a doubt. The familes are left to pick up the pieces and my heart goes out to each and everyone one of you. May God be with each of you and hold your heart close. I am sincerly sorry for this horrible act. I will never forget you in my prayers.
