Reflections for Police Officer Tina Gail DeLong-Griswold

Officer Griswold is the personification of Lady Warrior, and I wanted to extend the dedication of this piece to her. Thank you Tina for your sacrifice.

LADY WARRIOR
In memory of Deputy Anne Jackson, Skagit County Sheriff’s Department
And
US Forest Service Officer Kristine Fairbanks
Both killed in the line of duty in Washington State, September 2008

Somebody somewhere called you
“daughter”, or “sister”
Perhaps somebody somewhere called you
“mom”
I suppose somebody somewhere called you
“lover”
And the loss they feel, no doubt’s at least as strong

But Lady Warrior
Is how I came to know you
Sister Soldier
Is who you were to me
Lady Warrior
That fire that burned within you
Was the same warrior fire
That burns inside of me

You fought beside me
In the mountains and the valleys
You stood beside me
In the heat of the fire
You walked beside me
Down those darkest streets and alleys
Full of courage, and strength, and warrior fire

And Lady Warrior
Is how I came to know you
Sister Soldier
Is who you were to me
Lady Warrior
That fire that burned within you
Was the same warrior fire
That burns inside of me

Another warrior
Has fallen in the battle
A brave soldier
Has paid the final price
Another hero
Gave her life as a reminder
That freedom only comes
Through sacrifice

Warrior
Is how I came to know you
Soldier
Is who you were to me
Lady Warrior
That fire that burned within you
Was the same warrior fire
That burns inside of me

Lady Warrior
That fire that burned within you
Trust that your warrior fire
Burns on
Inside of me

Officer Griswold, You have the unique distinction of being the only female law enforcement officer to die in the line of duty this year. I will be proud to honor you by riding in the Police Unity Tour. I wish you would be cycling next to me instead of watcing from above. God bless you and your family.

My prayers go out to the family of Officer Griswold. May you rest in peace. I know what its like to lose a family member to senseless violence and although these words won't even begin to repair the hurt you feel, I wanted to share my condolences. God Bless!

Officer Tina Griswold, Ma'am, it has touched my heart more than anything in the way you were suddenly taken away from your family, your comrades of Lakewood Police Department, and all the many friends that loved you and will miss you sorely upon this earth. I know you're in a place where pain and sorrow shall never confront you as it did on this earth we live. I need you to know that your unselfishness, your dedication, and the many risks that you took while serving as an LEO will never go forgotten as long as time shall come and go. God comfort your husband, and children as they face their first Christmas without you. I wish to salute you with the following poem written just in honor of you and the brothers that left with you to the heavens above.

Sincerely and Respectfully,
Michael Rayford Powell

The New Centurions
Isaiah 57
1 Good people pass away;
the godly often die before their time.
But no one seems to care or wonder why.
No one seems to understand
that God is protecting them from the evil to come.
2 For those who follow godly paths
will rest in peace when they die.
Four brave warriors worked hard to protect society
Each were committed with similarities yet part of a variety
Countless times they laid their very lives on the line
Taking many risks to secure innocent lives, yours and mine

They were “The New Centurions” that loved the job they did
Patrolling the streets, and answering calls was their bid
They were public servants serving those they swore to protect
The many they served and made friends held them to elect

How do we bid farewell to the fantastic four that gave their all
They worked so hard and had families they loved and walked tall
Gods chosen servants willed to preserve and protect everyone
Losing them so sudden leaves hearts heavier than that of a ton

Although they’re gone to heaven to serve God as sky angels bright
As earthly beings it’s harder for us to give them up without a fight
We’ll always miss you our friends and your smiles a ray of light
Thanks for your endless service given unselfishly Day and Night!

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Griswold and we honor her distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Griswold, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with her when she walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that she will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Officer Griswold is a woman distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for her brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family, and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

It was their duty to serve; it is ours to remember.

Tina:
I remember when I first met you. You walked into the Mason County reserve academy, young, full of ideas and ready to take on the world. I remember you during UDT, willing to take on the biggest guy there, just to prove you could. I remember spending time with you and Nikki, the BBQ's, the laughs and you being there right after my son was born. I also remember working with you, because you were the only one on the force that made me feel tall. We were two women that tried every day to do our best and go home to our kids at night. I sit here now, still unable to stop the tears. I cry for your family, for the tragedy they should never have experienced. I cry for the people that never got to know you. They missed out on so much. But mostly I cry for us. A friendship that fell by the side as we both moved down our different paths in life. I am sad that I never told you that I already thought of you as a hero. You were part of the drive and inspiration that helped me be the best officer I could be. Your smile will be missed but your love of life and dedication to protect and serve will continue in each one of us that was lucky enough to have our lives touched by you. Watch over us, dear friend and know we will continue your fight.

Officer Tina (as my son respectfully calls you),

My children had the honor of knowing you through your work at Lakes High School. My youngest also had regular contact with you (and a lot of other Lakewood officers) at his place of employment. Please know that you have had a positive impact on my children, an impact that will follow them throughout life. For that, I am most grateful! Thank you for your unselfish service to our community. Please know that you will forever live on in our hearts and memories!

May you rest in peace.
