It is with deep and sincere sorrow that I learn of the untimely death of Sergeant Mickey Hutchens; his loyalty and deep commitment to the Winston-Salem Police Department of North Carolina is highly respected in the twenty-seven years of unselfish service in keeping the peace, giving to the community and citizens will always be respected and remembered. My sympathy goes out to his wife and daughters at this time when they will deal with the loss of his loving presence. I offer my final salute to Sgt. Hutchens, and the terrific job he did in protecting and backing his fellow brother Officer Daniel Clark. He is now in heaven whereas God shall greet him with open arms and extend to him a hearty "Well Done My Good and Faithful Servant"! Sincerely and Repectfully, Michael Rayford Powell.

We Salute Our Fallen Brother

For I’m already being poured out like a drink offering,
And the time has come for my departure; I have fought
The good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Now there is in store for me a crown of righteousness…2 Timothy 4:6-8.

The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will
Of God lives forever…1 John 2:17

Today we stand to salute our brothers’ departure from here
He’ll leave behind a family and those who hold him dear
In a career he served where all give some, yet he gave his all
He leaves this earth behind as he received his final call

The risks he faced on this final tour was one of a unique kind
His bravery surpassed his courage at last he leaves a world behind
Everyday he’ll be remembered for all the special things he did
He patrolled the streets as Gods chosen servant to him goodbye we bid

Don’t worry our brother in blue you’ll always be a part of our mind
We’ll always recall the bright face you bore one that’s so very kind
The hours you spent making a difference protecting all mankind
You stood your watch and kept the faith of one so hard to find

We Salute Our Fallen Brother for the impeccable job he done
You walked tall on duty with integrity second to no one
The beat you worked was like a battlefield in a society filled with change
Yet you never wavered in your commitment to a job that somehow was strange

The flag of our nation will not fly at half mast across the entire USA
But trust us dear brother with taped badges we honor you this way
A symbol of a fallen brother that graced our presence everyday
We’ll always salute the job you performed before you went away!

Thank you for all that you have done 27 years of service. As an officer we look for leadership and there is no better example than the man responsible for his troops to be first in line leading by example. To the family I am sorry for your loss and to the community you truly have lost a public servant who gave his all to protect and up hold the laws of this state.I have lost several brothers in the past 11 years and again another has paid the most unthinkable price death to that I say protect the gates of heaven until we meet again.

To Sgt. Mickey Hutchens, to all family members and friends who call him beloved, and to his law enforcement family:

I was sorry to learn of Mickey's death and extend my sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you have suffered. Words are insufficient to describe the sadness I feel for the Hutchens family. May you find comfort in your faith and the support of the law enforcement community.

There are many police survivors who share this same journey with you, and that community will be there to support you. Mickey's memory will be forever honored and revered.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Mickey gave to his community and the citizens of North Carolina and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on October 12, 2009.
