As always, it's so gratifying to see that the family of the honored person has left reflections. So many of those listed here seem to have been forgotten by those who came after and I find it sad. Maybe some cannot bring themselves to look back on a family member who lost their life in the service of others, but some just seem to have lost touch. Not the case here and that warms my heart.
Today is the 91st anniversary of your death and I have full confidence that God has blessed you and that your rest if quite peaceful, Brother.

Uncle Ed's badge number was 834 and proudly hangs in a frame on my wall. He is the first of three generations of Bates' to serve in law enforcement (his nephew is retired Sheriff, Madera County, California and me, retired Lt., City of Marina, California.) It is ironic that he could survive the battlefields of France in WWI and then die in civilian law enforcement. RIP.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 88th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Agent Bates I salute you for doing a job most would not think about doing. We work alone, with back up always a lot further away than we wished. You were doing a difficult job under the most hazard conditions. You encounter all sorts of criminals, hazards, and dangersous conditions, but always doing your job. I honor you today for your service and making the ultimate sacrafice. We protect the Nations Railroads, employees and the public as well as assist other law enforcement. Rest in peace my brother...

Special Agent Bates, though many years have passed, your memory is kept alive through this wonderful website and in various other locations around the country. You made the ultimate sacrifice while helping to protect one of America's most vital assets, it's railroads.
Being a Railroad Police Officer has as many hazzards as being any other type of Police Officer and some that are not so common. There is always risk to life and limb when dealing with trains yet, despite that risk, women and men like you go out and do the job every day. You are a hero.
God Bless and may you continue to Rest in Peace, Brother.
