I know, from personal experience, how arduous, lonely and dangerous the business of protecting our borders from illegal entry can be.

I am a graduate of the 129th Session of the U. S. Border Patrol academy and I served in the Yuma Sector from April, 1979 until May, 1980 when, for personal reasons, I left the patrol and reenlisted in the Marine Corps.

I recall the nightly patrols along the U. S.-Mexico border and performing 'sign-cutting'; the USBP's method of determining that an illegal incursion has been made; calling in the foot sign over the radio and starting the job of tracking the illegal entrant(s) by means of a hand-held spotlight held in the left hand while leaning out of the driver's side window and shining the light over the foot tracks of the individual and keeping the sign on the left of the vehicle while driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle through the desert.

My fellow agents and myself were aware of the fact that we were perfectly illuminated inside our Dodge Ramchargers (our SUV's @ that time) and of the possibility of being shot at while performing our duties, although we did not dwell on this ever present danger.

While 'cutting' four illegals one night in the Sonora Desert south of Yuma, I came close to driving over them and probably would have, had they not jumped up, shouting and waving their arms. I remember looking up through the windshield and, seeing them, hitting the brakes before striking them.

Another time, while working a day shift, I decided to take my lunch along the Yuma Main Canal. I exitted my vehicle with my Gott cooler in hand, and sat down with my legs dangling over the side of the canal. The headgate was open at the time and as I reached in to get a sandwich from my cooler, my boots slipped on the mossy-like algae that had formed on the side of the canal. I began to slip into the canal with my arms behind me, digging in and trying with all my might to hold on and prevent myself from going down into the canal with its roiling water entering through the floodgate. I managed to roll over onto my stomach, arms completely outstretched, nails digging into the dirt at the top of the bank, and was finally able to pull myself (by brute strength) out of the canal. I was soaking wet from the waist down. I knew that had I lost my tenuous grip on the bank, I would not have been found until my body was located floating somewhere in Mexico!

My hat is off to the men and women of the United States Border Patrol who so bravely perform their mission of protecting our borders against illegal entry on the loneliest stretches of the border, day and night, around -the-clock, year-round.

Thank you for your selfless sacrifice which all too often is accomplished without a hint of 'thanks' and all too often goes unnoticed.

My deepest and heartfelt condolences go out to the wife and family of Agent Rosas for your loss. Words can not express what you feel at this time. My prayers are with Agent Rosas and your family at this time of grief.
