Reflections for Special Deputy Sheriff William C. Callihan

I never knew my Grandfather, but heard stories from my Father and my Grandma Callihan.. I believe he was very passionate about his work for the Department. I love hearing stories about my Ancestors.. Grandfather, Rest in Peace.. I am so proud that he is being Homered along with other Fallen Officers this year.

I am a retired police officer who came to Wilmington in the winter of 2022. I volunteered at the Wilmington Railroad Museum (North Carolina) and discovered that William Coit Callihan was employed as a railroad police officer with Atlantic Coast Lines Railroad when he was killed over protecting moonshine in Fayetteville, NC. He was murdered on Feb 24, 1923. He is on memorials at the state capitol in Raleigh, NC and on a county sheriff memorial in Fayetteville, NC. However, he was not on the Washington DC national fallen officers memorial. I worked with staff in DC and his name will be added in May, 2023. If you have any additional information about William Callihan or his murder, I will be continuing research including attempting to pardon the Native American who was tried, convicted and released for the murder. 920-749-0415 [email protected]
