Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Monte Leroy Matthews

His Judgment Day:
The officer stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shinning, Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek To my church have you been true?"
The officer squared his shoulder and said, "No, Lord, I guess I aint, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was rough, And sometimes I've been violent Because the streets are tough.
But I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep.. Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept an unmanly tear.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't...I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne, where the saints often trod. As the officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, Officer. You've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell"

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Matthews and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Matthews, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Deputy Matthews is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family, and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

My Friend, in viewing the ODMP i never wanted to see someone I knew...
I think about all the calls we went on together. You called in my very first DUI before I ever had the privilege of working with you. I remember the call when you kicked in your first door. I remember going to lost lake and feeling safe as possible with a shots fired call with you as my partner.
You are my brother in Law Enforcement as well as someone I called my friend.

As a fellow deputy in a neighboring county, this tragedy hit very close to home for us. I was humbled by the massive amount of people that turned out to pay their respects to Leroy today. He will always be remembered there is no doubt. Be proud of what he stood for and know that we will carry on in his name.
My prayers are with the family and the Adams County Sheriff's Office.

a fireman once told me that police officers were created so that fireman would have heroes. it puts me at ease to think that even the ones who receive all gratitude respect officers above all else. thank you deputy Matthews and to the family,....you are now a part of an enormous family who will always be there to support you and aid you when you need us.
