I am always so saddened by the news of one of our own being lost to us. Everything I have heard and read about Officer Canales is so caring and so positive, the kind of LEO that inspired us all. Prayers with the family and our LE family as we mourn the passing of one of our own. RIP Officer Canales, you gave us YOUR ALL, we shall not forget your gift to us.

Thank you Officer Canales for your many years of service to the citizens of Houston. May God bless your family and friends during this very difficult time. Your service today marks the anniversary of another fine HPD Officer, Gary Gryder. May you and Gary guard the streets above and protect us all once again.

For Police Officer Henry Canales:

The duties of a police officer are fraught with danger. None is greater than for those who work in patrol or under-cover operations. Both of these duties rely upon the officer working mostly alone.

As in patrol, the under-cover officer is challenged in a situation usually occurring in seconds, without the benefit of preparation and, if the officer survives, a lot to explain.

They are usually second-guessed by others and none do it more than his/her supervisors. It is a job requiring steel nerves and street savvy that not many possess. And, when things go bad they are horrible.

Henry Canales had what it takes to endure the hours of investigation and egage the trash that would take his life. He was fortunate, in a way, to have a partner who would be there to "take out" the trash. Each officer, in this case, are heros among heros in my belief.

Evil will persist. And, many select police officers everywhere will step-up to the task of under-cover investigation. We always will be there to do what needs to be done. And, Henry Canales' death, and many similar, will ensure that we do.

Henry's family, friends and co-workers can all take satistfaction in knowing that they loved and knew a real hero. A soldier-of-the-law who stands tall among us.

I am proud to render Officer Henry Canales a final salute.

Pennylvania State Police
