Reflections for Assistant Chief Joseph Christopher Cannon

I HEARD OF YOUR DEATH YESTERDAY AS OFFICERS FROM SURROUNDING DEPARTMENTS GATHERED FOR A WARRANT SWEEP AT OUR OFFICE. MY COUNTY IS ONLY LOCATED TWO COUNTIES AWAY FROM YOURS. SO OFTEN I HAVE TO DRIVE THROUGH PLUMERVILLE ON I-40. I WILL NEVER SEE THE EXIT SIGN AGAIN WITHOUT THINKING OF YOUR DEATH. I'M SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF YOUR LIFE, I'M SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF YOUR TOWNS PEACE, BUT I'M MOSTLY SORRY THAT YOUR FAMILY & LOVED ONES WILL HAVE TO FACE EVERY COMING DAY KNOWING THAT YOU ARE NO LONGER WITH THEM. I'M SURE THAT THIS IS THE LOSS THAT WILL BE NOTICED THE MOST.

I frequent ODMP for a couple reason. First and foremost is to offer kind words for the fallen officers and try and comfort the family. Second, to reflect on lessons learned. We have to always think officer safety, officer safety, officer safety. I pray that his family and friends make it through this terrible event. God Bless You Assistant Chief Joey Cannon.

My thoughts are with all of your loved ones and close friends during this very trying time. I only wish you were able to enjoy some of your retirement after such a long career as you surely deserved that much for your dedication to law enforcement. You are a true hero and will always be remembered. Keep watch over all of your loved ones and those still out on patrol. You have not been forgotten.

For Assistant Chief Joey Cannon:

Nobody knows why terrible things must happen. Least of all to those bringing law and order to our existence. The answer is beyond our grasp.

Evil simply exists. Cowards who shoot down a law officers will always be among us. We will always be there to confront them. We will always be there to lock them up.

Chief Joey Cannon was among those on the front line in the battle for justice. He was two weeks short of settling into a well-earned retirement, but, he chose to be a soldier-of-the-law to the end. He is a hero among heros, and deserving of the highest honor. He has demonstrated genuine devotion to duty befitting a hero pictured in the halls of any police academy.

Though it is sad to all of us, each of us that has retired from law enforcement cannot look at this incident without feeling an extra-measure of sentiment.

Assistant Chief Joey Cannon, I pray for your family, friends and co-workers. May the grief they feel, in time, be replaced by smiles while recalling the days when you touched each of their lives. I am certain there are many.

To you, sir, I render a final salute.

Cpl. Ralph D. Fiorenza (Ret.)
Pennylvania State Police

Joey was a great man and dedicated officer. Our community has lost one of it's best. I have many good memories of working and visiting with him on duty and off. A true hero whose legacy is being carried on by his son Dep. Josh Cannon. What a tragedy.

Joey was the kind of guy you could really talk to and for a guy like me with only a few years under my belt, he was an asset. I could go to him with LE questions or problems, big or small. Joey was the guy you wanted backing you up when things didn't seem right or were going badly. Many times he backed me up and helped me out as new guy. He was always very patient with me, even when I didn't pick something up immediatey. He was an instructor for all of Conway County and some others as well, and his classroom was never dull. He taught my radar class back in 2005 and most recently (last week) he taught our Racial Profiling class, and if you can believe it, he even made those classes fun. He is irreplaceable and the department just won't be the same without him. He will be missed in the way a person misses a family member when they pass away. He was family to us all.
