Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Warren Keith "Skip" York

God bless you and your family.

Officer

For Deputies Burton Lopez and Warren York:

Our brothers, Deputy Burt Lopez and Skip York, responded to a domestic dispute. We have all gotten this call. The question is always...what will we encounter? We are tense, but it eases when we find it is just another dispute. But then -- the worst happens. An irrational, crazed or simply hateful indiviual strikes at the officers. In a few seconds it is over. Law officers who are trained to quell disputes, without arrest if possible, are dead. Murdered. Struck down by surprise -- by a coward. A hothead. A suicidal maniac that will threaten other officers forcing them to kill him. He will escape having to face his deeds. It is the path that cowards choose. It is the only one they know.

I fully surpport our brotherhood that exists among all who wear the badge. It is honorable and worthy that we place ourselves at high-risk for the public. And, for one another. We are soldiers-of-law. It is what we do.

As a retired state trooper and a retired deputy sheriff(Lake County, FL) I grieve for the family, co-workers and all who know and respect both Burt and Skip. I pray that they will survive this tragedy intact. And help one another.

And, to both of these courageous and valiant law officers I render a final salute.
