Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Burton Lopez
Gone but not forgotten... Today is a difficult day as it marks two years ago today when a great friend Burt and his partner were shot and killed and went home to be with the Lord. He is thought of often and missed. Please keep the familes and fellow deputies in your prayers as this will be a difficult day for many people...

Dear family of Burt,
I am currently memorializing Burt on a project for my school. As soon as I'm done I plan on sending it up to Anthony and Jami for you to have. My goal is to donate at least 50.00 to the Burt Lopez fund, and if I can I will try to give more. I know this was and still is a very emotional time for all the family members of Burt and I want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Sincerely, Joshua Platt

To the families of Deputy Burt Lopez and Deputy Skip York:
It lifts me up when I often hear the fond stories of Skip and Burt, told by those officers who worked beside them. Their fellow officers respected these men in ways all men hope to be. They give many of us a standard to reach for. I am inspired by their courage. I am deeply sorry for your loss. Just know their lives will forever be remembered and honored. May they rest in peace, and may God bless you and your families.

Deputy Lopez, I will leave this week to participate in the Police Unity Tour to honor you and your sacrifice. I will meet with your family to give them a gift from the Police Unity Tour.
I have heard nothing but great things about you not only as a police officer but as a person as well. Just reading the reflections left, you are thought of highly. I happen to be friends with Lt. Arnold Brown with your agency and he too has high thoughts about you.
I want to say this is an honor for me to do this and look forward to meeting your family. I know when the person who participated to honor my brother in 2008 gave me the gift, I was taken back and could feel nothing but pride knowing that someone took time out of their week to honor him.
To the family of Deputy Lopez, if you need anything during National Police Week, dont hesitate to call me. Mrs. Lopez has my phone number. Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed.

Greetings, This is a day that I can't necessarily call an anniversary, but the day marks a year ago that one of the finest friends, devout loving family man, follower of christ, and co-worker, and friend to all had his life taken from him and brought home to the Lord. I can't believe a year has gone by since Burt and Skip had their lives suddenly come to an end. I know this tragedy impacted so many other lives because Burt was such a special person. On this day I hope you will all take a moment of silece in remembrance and celebration of such a great person. Please take a moment to pray for all those who were close to Burt and will be thinking of him on the 25th of April and pray the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Department and his family and friends will have the strength to make it through this day and remember all the great and wonderful things Burt has done for so many people. I pray he is resting in peace and looking down on all of us and I await the day we will be reunited in friendship in heaven. I pray for everyone in Jesus name, Amen... I miss you buddy...

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

To all who knew Burt & those who didn't, he was/is a great person. I think of Burt & the family often and I check this reflection site often to read the comments. Burt was like a brother/best friend to me and Burt, the family & I shared many great times together. Not a day goes by that I don't think about Burt. I wish there were more people like Burt out there because this world would be a much better place to live in. He was one of a kind and such a pleasure to be around. He was a great Dad, husband, family man, friend, & partner to all those he lived, worked, and played with. As you read all the reflections I wish that a piece of all that Burt was made of would become a small part of each of us. Burt & all the Okaloosa County Sheriff Department members, my heart goes out to all of you and I pray you are all recovering from the loss of But, Skip, & Tony. May God be with all of you always and keep all of you safe and to the family you are always in my prayers. Sincerely Burt's Life Long Friend,

Your case has been closed, the world seems to be healing and moving on, but there are so many of us that miss you and think of you and Skip and Tony every single day. I am honored to have known you and been your friend, and while I will never know why it worked out that I was the one on the other end of the radio that day; I know you knew it was me and that we all did everything we could to try to save you both. It doesn't get easier and the pain never lessens. You will never be forgotten, and your sacrifice was not in vain. My heart goes out to your family and friends and I know you are in the Lord's arms and finally at peace. I love you, brother.

Burt was one of a kind. I went through the academy with Burt back in 2002/2003. He deffinately taught me a few things in the academy about life it self. He was always in a good mood and always had a smile.
You will be missed Burt.

Our hero of blue has fallen
A time of peace is calling
For you to go with God above
He'll give you wings of blue with love
To send a message for everyone
To remember a life and what was done
A dream fulfilled of our angel of blue
We honor you for the job you swore to do
A promise was kept from a hero like you
You put your life on the line each day
To protect and serve in everyway
And to give you thanks we will do our part
To share your message and to keep you in our heart

I want to offer my condolences to this truly dedicated Deputy and his family. It's a shame to hear that another Deputy has paid the ultimate sacrifice. We protect our communities from harm but take the risk of not coming home. I appreciate the service you have given us.
