Reflections for Police Officer Stephen James Mayhle
Dear Family Member:
I am a concerned citizen far away in California and I just want you to know that I am praying for you and your family today to find the strength it will take to get through this needless tragedy. Officer Mayhle is another hero in my opinion and he paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve his nation and home of Pittsburgh. I will honor him and pray for him and his family that they can find a way to come to grips with this senseless tragedy. There is no finer person than those that protect and serve our country. No one can take him away from you as long as you carry him in your heart daily and memories forever. God Bless You all,
Fondly,
Pat

I am deeply saddened to hear of yet another instance where some of our bravest officers were gunned down in cold blood. I can't imagine the pain and sorrow felt by the families, departments, and communities these officers were a part of. I keep a prayer in my heart for fallen officers and their families at all times, and now am going to make room for these. It is just too sad that the evil and selfish criminal who cut these brave officers lives short did not meet the same fate as did the one in Oakland a few weeks ago. Rest easy now Brother, we have the watch.

I just heard the news of the shooting and my thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved and the Department. Domestic Vio calls are ALWAYS the most dangerous calls an officer responds to. You all are in the Los Angeles Police Departments prayers. Rest in Peace.

My heart breaks for Officer Mayhle's family, friends and co-workers. I am sorry that you have to experience this pain.
I am the widow of Michael H. Wise, II who was killed in the line of duty in 2004. He was a former City of Pittsburgh paramedic and he always had good things to say about the officers who worked in the City. He said that the officers were always there when the paramedics needed them. I also have two friends who are officers and I know they must be hurting right now along with the rest of the department and the City.
My heart goes out to Officer Mayhle, his friends, his family, his fellow officers, and his fellow residents of Pittsburgh. It's a great town that just experienced a horrible loss. My condolences to all.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
