My deepest sympathy to all faimly friends and co workers of these three fine men who made the ultimate sacrafice for the people of the City of Pittsburgh. My husband was killed in the line of duty in January of 1991 and was a Hampton Township Police Officer. Two months later Grill and Heron of the Pittsburgh Police also made the ultimate sacrafice.
This is so tragic and I can say I know how you feel because I do know how you feel. You are in my thoughts and prayers and if you need to reach out to someone who has been there please feel free to contact me throught the Hampton Township Police Department. My heart is heavy but there is hope through the Lord and others who have been down this path before. May these heros rest in peace.

I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Officer StephenMayhle. Our community honors the courage and selfless devotion to duty of Stepehn Mayhle. We applaud his bravery and mourn his loss. Stephen is a true hero. Stephen's memory will be honored forever and his actions will be remembered as heroic. The courage and steadfast determination by all law enforecment officers to risk their own lives, so that others may live, shows the world that the best of the American spirit is alive in all of us. Eric died in the performance of his duty... he died doing what he was supposed to do, PROTECT THE PUBLIC. Watch over us and guide us Stephen.

My thoughts and prayers are with Officer Mayhle and his family. May you find comfort and support during this difficult time.

The Final Inspection:
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone
When they come I will stand my ground
Stand my ground I'll not be afraid
Thoughts of home take away my fear
Sweat and blood hide my veil of tears
Once a year say a prayer for me
Close your eyes and remember me
-Rest easy Officer Mayhle, you will not be forgotten.

After 20 years of service I found myself becoming less and less a man of faith. However, I do believe there is a place in heaven for men with a sense of Duty, Honor and Courage. Godspeed Brother, I'm sure you are at peace in that place. You will not be forgotten by those who loved you and all the men and women who walked in your footsteps. God Bless you, your family and the members of your Department.

NYCPD, Ret.
