I wish to express my condolences to the family and friend,s of Officer John Hege. I live in San Francisco and when I heard the news I was so sad. The more I learn of his life the more I learn what a wonderful man he was. He was a teacher, then a police officer who died in the service service of his community. He also donated his organs to save the life of others. I know his family must be suffering a lot of pain from the loss of John. He was an exceptional person indeed. You must be very proud of him. His life has touched so many people, like me, who never had the chance to meet him. I hope that this knowledge will help to ease your pain.
Sincerely,
Katherine Gado

I just got done reading an article about how Off. Hege's donated organs have found new homes in four lucky recipants. His kidneys, liver and heart have gone to help others, as well as tissue donations that could help or save up to 50 more people.
I never had the pleasure to meet you John but I know you must have been one hell of a great guy when even in death your still helping your community and it's residents.
A 73 year old was lucky to be given John's heart. I'm sure that individual is going to live a long time. That heart had to be very big, strong and full of love.
Rest in Peace Brother.

Walking the point
by Doyle Wheeler SDPD Retired
When I was young man I walked the point in this land.
Taking each day of my life was in my hands, hoping that I had quick and tough hands.
I had my share of gun fights winning each one as luck was on my side.
Now I look at these brave men and women walking the point facing bigger guns.
Where do we get such brave daughters and sons willing to face these crooks with guns?
Just when you make sure there is no gun, you have check for a knife, a needle or a pipe,
and finding nothing doesn’t mean you won’t have to fight for your life.
Walking the point talks it toll young men and women quickly grow old.
There will be times when you lose friends and it’s impossible to understand.
The pain runs so deep you think you’ll die you hide from loved ones and friends and don’t let them see you cry.
You miss them more than you can say party because they were ripped away.
I buried ten in ten years the highest number in the nation was ours to lose.
Twenty years later I still have a whole in my heart
for brave friends that were taken for walking the point!
They walk the point so that the rest of us may lay down and rest,
Without any doubt they’re America’s best, but sadly most people could care less.
They don’t understand the sacrifices made for them by hundreds of thousands each day.
Every three days on average one falls walking the point for us all.
Where do we get such brave women and men, may God bless all of them!
Dedicated to my brave sisters and brothers putting their lives on the line throughout this country every day and night so hopefully someday the public may come to understand what you’ve sacrificed for this land. I send you my most sincere blessing and my prayers to ease your pain.

"…They were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

To the family of John Hege
My sincerest heartfelt sympathy is extended to you all...for I know all to well the path you are now forced to take.....I wish I could take the pain away....but I can't......I am the mother of the last SFPD officer shot and killed in the line of duty 2 years ago Christmas.....He was 28 years old....and had gotten married just 2 months prior. John's killer was a parolee....my son's was a prison escapee.....definitely some similar problems here with the DOC and inmates in general, not to mention gun control.
I want you to know my thoughts are prayers are wtih you every moment as you walk this path. What I can tell you is to lean on the dept for support. Also lean on the group called COPS who helps family members left behind.
Remember this....John loved his family and loved his job. He was the CHOSEN one to now patrol the gates of heaven. No greater priviledge can be bestowed upon anyone.
All my prayers
