Reflections for Sergeant Daniel Takashi Sakai
ITS SOUNDS LIKE THUNDER FAR AWAY...
It sounds like thunder far away, but the skies are blue and bright...
And soon they crest the hill nearby, and ride into our sight.
They shake the ground with powerful sound, and they make some hearts beat fast...
They look so proud and noble, like Knights come from the past.
Side by side, they always ride, and seem to move as one...
From early in the morning light, to the setting of the sun.
And children point and wave to them, from cars that pass them by...
And young ones ask their parents, why the men have mirrors for eyes.
They ride the roads, and fight for good, and defend small ones like you...
They ask to ride, and do with pride, and sometimes they are few.
Like men of steel, on Silver Wings, they sparkle in the light...
then with a roar and rumble, they ride out of our sight.
Sometimes when one has fallen, never to ride again...
You can hear the others calling, like thunder on the wind.
Side by side, they slowly ride, and their thunder is a mournful sound...
And the mirrors hide their eyes from us, when teardrops fall to ground.
So if you see one riding, and you look into his face...
You see your reflection in his eyes, you know that you are safe.
For motormen are a special breed, they love to ride the wind...
And when you hear the thunder boom, the fallen ones ride again.

For Sergeants Daniel Sakai, Mark Dunakin and Ervin Romans:
Most of us in law enforcement go through our entire careers and never even come close to being slain, and yet others have been killed in their initial year of entry to service. Nobody can answer why, nor who might be next. Such is our lot.
One thing is for certain, the same risk exists no matter what uniform we wear or where on this earth we perform our duty to the public. The risks might be greater at one location over another, but that is little consolation to the law officer's family who has died in the most remote parts of our land. A law officer's life is on the line no matter the location, nor the circumstances.
In the case of Sergeants Sakai, Dunakin and Romans we have the ultimate risks - the stopping of wanted persons unknown to us, in traffic, and the entry into a building that houses a cop-killer.
No matter the circumstances, the killing of law officers is the work of the most depraved souls and demons among us. I personally have regret, yet satisfaction, that the culprit in this incident was dispatched from the living among us. I regret that these officers had to die, and I am satisfied that their killer will receive final judgement, though not on this earth.
Sergeants Sakai, Dunakin and Romans, I am certain, are proceeding together to the center of a legion of officers who have died before them. They will be lavished with a welcome that only a hero among hero's can receive.
My hope is that each of their families might survive the trauma of this episode without feeling that these men have not given their lives for a worthy cause. None of us, anywhere, no matter what we do, can ever exceed the honor of having died for what we all hold dear - peace, order, and safety for all those we have sworn to protect. This has been accomplished valiantly by Dan, Mark and Ervin - true soldiers-of-the-law.
To these brave men, I render a final salute.

God rest you, my Brother, and bring peace and succor to your family.
