May God Bless the family of the good Sergeant and all of his coworkers. We lost one of our own in the line of duty two years ago and feel great sympathy. This reminds me of the loss of Officer Paul L. Verna in 1983. We are all brothers in arms.

A long life of service shows this brother was dedicated and the urgency of another officer in need proded him to a careless moment when a citizen did not obey the rules.

My heart goes out to the family, friends, and department of this fallen brother. Our prayers will be with the family that God's love and provision of comfort will be suficient. There is nothing that can be said to relieve the lonliness and loss, however, just knowing that this brother's fellow officers across the United States and around the globe will never forget the sacrifice your loved one gave to the job he loved.

Sgt. Hernandez,

You gave twenty fours years of your life providing safety of others. Now you are in God's hands and he is safely protecting you from harm's way and pain. It is sad you weren't able to enjoy retirement and spend time with your family.

To your family, this tradgic loss causes pain and sorrow. Know that Sgt Hernandez died enjoying what he did for others, but most of all for his family.

God Bless Sgt Hernandez's Memory

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To the family and friends of Sgt. Greg Hernandez and the members of the Tulare County Sheriff's Office.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Greg was tragically killed.

To Greg's family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son Larry was killed, the entire law enforcement community in the Bay Area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Greg gave to his community and the citizens of California, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 6, 2009.
