The last time I saw Joe he was Sergeant Sanders. I was the Target processing Chief with 11th Marines. Sgt Sanders was the Back Bone of the Marine Corps a very impressive Non Commisioned Officer. I had heard that Joe had gotten out of the Marines after serving his time in Iraq and had joined another very honorable organization the CHP. I had no doubt that Joe would excell and serve and protect. I am truely lost for words to hear of his untimely death. Semper Fi Joe may you rest in peace. To his wife and children who I never had the opportunity to meet, I am truely sorry for your loss.

Thank you Officer Sanders for serving our country and giving me my freedom. You continued to serve the citizens of California upon your return from Iraq. You are the true definition of a hero. My condolences go out to your family and co-workers. I pray that God will give them strength to get through the hard times. May your children grow up to know that their father was a hero.

Sir may your wife and kids always remember you are the bravest of the brave. You fought for our freedom in a foreign land as well as on your own soil. You did two jobs that most would be afraid to do and the others wouldn't want to do. Yes that makes you a American Hero by any standard. I wished I could have been there to pull you from the vehicle that struck you but I wasn't. It is my Honor to leave this for Your Family and you to read. One day your wife and kids will meet you on streets of Gold and none of this pain will even be a memory.Truly GOD waits with open arms for such a Valiant Warrior.

Joseph Sanders and I served together in the Marine Corps. when he was stationed at Camp Lejeune NC. He and I served in Iraq every day for 7 months, we have some history. He knew his job and did his best every day to set the example for others to follow. All though he was a hard man to deal with on occasion he did have another side that was funny as well as understanding, willing to listen if you needed someone to talk to. I am certain that this personality followed him to CHP and others were able to see him as I did.

How sad we all are at the loss of this brave young warrior who was merely trying to get motorists home safely. Our prayers and condolences go to the family and friends of this fine officer. God must have needed yet another "Springs" officer in Heaven and he certainly has the finest!! As I always do when an officer is taken, I try to remember that the officer is with God, in Heaven where there are no TCs to work, no traffic to control, no drunks to wrestle, no paperwork to cuss. This young officer stood proudly when he reached Heaven because he was a Marine and therefore one of the best both because of his choice of service and Department!! I can only urge his fellow CHP officers to remember him every shift and to keep strong and strive to be as proud as he was. Know that there are civilians here who appreciate the work that you do and love you because you keep us safe. God will bless you for your work.
