My prayers and thoughts are with this family. A few months ago we lost one of our own due to being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic at an accident. Really hurts when good people are taken from us so suddenly. Your watch has been transfered to another, 10-42 my brother.

Officer Thomas Wiederhold

Officer Sanders:

You were willing to lay it all on the line for all of us in Iraq, and you chose to continue to serve all of us in California upon your safe return home. God bless you, sir, for being who you are. While I'm sure you didn't want things to end the way they did, you still gave your life for the public you faithfully served.

To the family, friends, and fellow Officers:

While no words can ease your grief, I'm prayin' for peace and relief to come your way, especially as you get through the holidays. Look to God, and He'll guide you through these dark days.

God bless you all

May the Lord give his family strength to deal with this tragedy and bless them in the future. He was one of few with the courage to protect fellow citizens. We all know the ultimate price that we may have to pay when accepting this career path. He chose to serve his fellow man and protect those who cannot or will not protect themselves. I hope those that worked with him know that his spirit should still be there when back is required.

Joe, it seems only yesterday you reported to the Santa Fe Springs Area to begin your career. Your love for the job and thrill to work the road were contagious to your peers. You knew how special it was to be a California Highway Patrol Officer. While your time with us was short, you made an immeasurable impact on those around you. Think of all the lives you saved: the DUI driver, the stranded motorists with no friends/funds/family, etc... your presence alone made us safer.

It was sure pouring rain that morning. I can only think of how wet and cold you were with that flare in your hand walking down the freeway. The red glow, the smoke, the heat shooting little sparks on your rain gear. And then it happened so quickly. I put myself in your situation so many times in the past. So many times doing exactly the same thing you did. Why you?

When I think of your children growing up without their father, I feel so very sad. But, I can tell you this much Joe; they will be okay. But, it will take time. I lost my father at a young age and I personally know what it is like. Your family is part of our family. You children are our children. They will grow up and remember you and we will be there to tell them about you. You will not be forgotten.
