I was sitting in the breakroom at work this a.m. and picked up a copy of the
Seattle Post Intelligencer. As I was flipping thru, I came to the obituary section and recognized your picture from this site!! Small world! I read (I think in a Houston paper) that you had grown up on Whidbey Island. I grew up right across the water in Port Townsend. Smaller world!
P.O. Abernethy served proudly and was deeply loved and respected by those who knew him. It is a tragedy to lose him. We never know when our lives on this earth will end, but we can make a reservation in Heaven now and assure us a place when God calls us to Himself. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6) and He PAID the price for our sins on the Cross so we don't have to pay the penalty for our sins. Yipee! If we accept His payment by faith we can have salvation and spend eternity with Him in Heaven. It is not something we must earn, it is a gift. The most precious one we can ever receive. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith_and this not from yourselves, it is the GIFT of God_not by good deeds, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2: 8,9. For without faith, it is impossible to please God. And our faith must be in God's only Son, Jesus Christ.
You were a credit to the uniform, Officer Abernethy. My heart goes out to your loved ones left behind and may the Lord comfort them as only He can. I look forward to meeting you one day in the presence of Jesus Christ. Enjoy
Christmas and every other day celebrating with our Savior!

Angels In Blue"
He worked the holidays and weekends,
away from family and friends.
To keep this peace for you and me.
Then one day he paid the price, he gave his life.
You've done well my friend, patrolling these earthly streets.
Now it's time to walk on Heaven's beat.
The next time you see a Police Officer or two,
remember they are one of God's Angels in Blue.
And God said; "Blessed are the Peace Makers."

Right now i can only feel anger. I know this will not make anything better but how could someone take you away from your family, your kids and co-workers. The EVIL don't care about families, or if its Christmas or that your kids will forever be affected. Sir may the Lord somehow guide your family and co-workers through this and may your assailant pay with his life to assure this will never happen again. God be with you Sir.

Officer Abernathy, as I got ready this morning for work, I saw on the news that you were going to be laid to rest today. I cried. I pray that the almightly Lord will hold you Wife's hand as she walks into the church, I pray that he will reach over and wipe the tears from your children's faces. When all is done, I KNOW that he will gather you in his arms and take you to his kingdom where your life once more will begin.... We will remember you and the sacrifice you gave. May justice prevail for the person who robbed you of your life, may he live in torment for the rest of his life. Sir, again thank you, God bless you and your family.

Officer Abernethy
Rest in Peace Brother and tell my Son-in law Josh Norris EOW 07/05/2007 hello and have him show you around. My prayers are with your family during this dark time, but you will have your day, a day that you richly deserve, too many police cars to count, with lights blazing and sirens screaming escorting you. Hundreds of your brothers will stand at attention saluting you and the citizens of your community will shed tears. A 21 gun salute will sound out in respect for you and heart numbing Taps" will be played for you while your family receives a flag. There will not be a dry eye left from both your family and police family near and far. Saint Michael the chief of police in heaven will greet you at the pearly gates and welcome you to Saint Peter's district. You will never be forgotten and your strength and courage will live on to inspire every new deputy that takes up the call of the profession and your sacrifies will be remmebered through out the nation with every police officer. You got the call, you gave your all, and it was more than enough. So prop your feet up and take a load off up there and keep an ear to the radio so that when another of our brother's number is called you can meet them at the gate with a cup of coffee and a smile. Oh and put in a good word for me up there, I like the night watch and make sure my boy Josh is not sleeping the time way.
To the Family of Officer Abernethy
Your complete family are in my families prayers during this dark time. My family is just starting to make it thru a lost of our own with the death of my future son in-law Josh Norris. Tim was taken to early and should of have had more time with you guys. I know words at this time will never stop the hurt, but know your Husband and Dad is not far from you, he is the whisper in the wind, that feeling of being hugged when no one is there, he will always be at your side watching over ever accomplishment and catching ever tear that you guys shed. What has helped my family and may help yours, remember your love ones laugh, his smile and all those things that are unique to him, since they are truly what made him. He is a true hero in every sense of the word and your police family extends it arms to you, if this one from Louisiana can do anything do not hesitate to ask. God bless you and may he give you strength.
To Houston Police Department
My brothers and sisters this lost will always be felt at roll call, on the road or just talking at a break. For those that were on the scene, do not start second guessing your action, understand that nothing you did or things you felt you should have done would have changed this out come, the fault is with the coward that made the decision to take Tim's life. Like all of us that wear a badge, we do not do it for the fortune we will make, the glory that never comes, but go forward regardless of the risk for the love of fellow brother and sisters that we work beside us. Mourn your brother, but also dedicate your service in his name by being the best you possible can. Your Department are in my families prayers also. Hug your family and kiss their heads since they will need that to help calm their fears.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
that wasn't mine to keep
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne
where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
for the judgment of his god.
"Step forward now, policeman,
you’ve born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
you’ve done your time in hell"

To the Abernethy Family, My deepest sympathy to your family. When I heard of your loss it hit close at home. I too lost a Brother In Texas last year. I live In Washington State where my brother was born. When I heard he was shot and killed I was shocked, and deeply hurt. In times like this we appreciate the love our family has and try the hardest to forgive those who do terrible things like this. Remember the ultimate sacrifice your son gave to protect our families, and be proud of that. It takes an person of exceptional character to serve and protect. My prayers are with you during the great loss of your son, brother or husband. I am shedding tears as I write to you in honor of Timothy, and hope in time we all heal by our great loss!

To the family of Officer Abernethy: As a fellow Washingtonian and "neighbor" I wish to offer my deepest sympathies and condolences at the loss of your loved one.
As a former law enforcement officer, I know of the hazards associated with this most honorable profession and the courage it takes to perform the duties. Though I never had the honor and privledge to meet Timothy, I know he was a hero. Heros never die but, live on in the hearts and minds forever.
But most of all, as the stepfather of a fallen officer, I know of your pain and sorrow. Lean heavily on all those who will offer help at this sad time. Be not ashamed or afraid to express your grief and anger for this is the outlet that leads to healing. Time will never heal this wound completely but it will become more bearable. May the Lord send you peace and wrap you in the comforting arms of his tender mercies.
