Detective Joseph Airhart, Jr.,
The battle that a police officer fights is almost unlike any other because when he is injured or when he is killed those who are responsible have indeed struck out at each of us. And, we are injured much in the same way. But the wound that must heal is in the mind. Unlike the physical portion of our body, it can not do it alone. The mind heals only with the aid of others. When a police officer is wounded and takes years for the end to come, the suffering is not contained in the body of this one person. It is also in his family. And it injures every cop who looks upon the situation and realizes that very little can prevent it to happening again. The solution then, as I see it, is for each of us to render one another support, assistance, back-up and a strong demonstration of true brotherhood and sisterhood. Non-stop. Genuinely. No matter the person. No matter the color. No matter--anything. We have but one creed--that we bond fastly as fellow soldiers-of-the-law. No one or nobody will look out for us as well we will.
To our brother, Detective Joseph Airhart, Jr.--one who fought the hardest of battles--I render you a final salute.

Those of us who know the details of this story remain appalled at what happened. A brave man was wounded, left to die and an unremorseful killer was captured, disrupted his own trial with disgusting frequency only adding to the outrage. We pray for you and your family and will continue to do so. We will ALWAYS remember the sacrifice you made to maintain law and order in the most dangerous city in the nation.
