Officer Burnfield,
YOur a true American Hero who wore the badge. I know your in heaven with all of your brothers who went before you and know my son was one who met you at Heaven's gate.
To the family of Officer Burnfield, I know there are no words to be said to take away the pain you feel and the grief will go on. I know this because I lost my son, Sgt. Michael C. Weigand also while on duty by being hit 7 1/2 weeks ago. Please know you've got more support then you realize and we're all here for you whenever you need us. Police Officer Nathaniel Burnfield,

Once again a good officer of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been struck down in traffic while at the scene of an incident on the highway. It is always tragic when anyone dies along the highway, but especially tragic when it is a police officer. We have training, utilize our basic survival skills, and apply extra care, but the dangers that exist are numerous. The motoring public for the greater part is observant and mindful of those who work along the highways, but simply their are those who refuse to wisely slow down and ensure the safety of all, including themselves. Once an accident occurs it is too late. Too late to say I should have been more careful, too late to regret not being more observant and too late to save serious injury and death to others. Each of these situations should be a learning experience for both those working on the highway and those driving upon it. It should serve as a motivator to those who enforce the traffic laws. Plainly, strong, vigorous and reasonable traffic enforcement saves lives. Alertness, and forethought when working on the highway reduces some, but not all, of our high risk. Let not Officer Burnfield's death be in vain. Recognize him as a hero among heros. Make a tribute to him by vowing to do all you can, both as a traffic enforcent officer, and a motorist on the highway by making safety a priority. Each of us should regard the highway as a battlefield...because in it's own way...it is.

Pennsylvania State Police
