As an a participant on the LASD academy I see the memorial wall every day while I am at the training center. Getting reminded by our DIs everyday how unforgiving this career is and all of the fallen officers from the past. When you think of Officer deaths most people usually think of shootings or things related to crimes but most officers that pass away in the line of duty are from traffic stops. They are the most dangerous thing an officer can do because of all the other pedestrians driving by.
Deputy Hamson was doing just that, conducting a traffic stop and was struck by another vehicle. As a trainee I know one day that I will be put in the situation of having to conduct many traffic stops and I have to keep in mind that, this is the leading thing that kills peace officers. Deputy Hamson was doing his job to the best of his abilities and something so unfortunate happened.

First I would like to give my condolence to your family and to your loved ones. I understand it is always hard and unfortunate to hear the loss of a friend or family. I would like to thank you for your service. As tragic as it is to say you gave the full sacrifice in giving your life in doing what you loved to do. Doing a job that most people won't do because they can't do and would not do. Putting other in front of yourself in order to make a difference in people's lives. In changing peoples lives and making a difference in your community.
In addition, It's surreal to know that one day you are living and the next your gone. In a blink of an eye you never know what's going to happen. Who would have known that in August 16,2004 in a normal accident your live would be taken by an oncoming vehicle. It is shocking to know you are never promised another day. This has impacted me in taking advantage of my loved ones and cherishing them because you never know what can happen. Well Deputy Hamson once again i would like to thank you for your ultimate sacrifice and I want to give my deepest sympathy to your family.

I remember you Ham. I remember working with you fresh out of the academy. So hyper, so willing to go and do anything. I remember chit chatting at night working at East, and yelling at you to hurry up with the gates when you worked “David.” Laughing at you when you finally understood ‘walking’ not Joaquin, during count.
I will think of you every time I watch over the hedge with my kids. That damn squirrel was you, going a mile a minute and then getting distracted. He even has your name.
I remember you. I wish that wasn’t your face, but wouldn’t wish this pain on anyone else either.
To your family, I am so sorry. He loved you immensely.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the first anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for solace for your family. I am sure the five years since your injury and death were ones of struggle for them as well.
Rest In Peace
