Reflections for Police Officer David Donald Tome
God be with you and your family at this trying time. Know that many love you and pray for you.

Will the bagpipers play on my funeral day?
Will a sea of blue stretch down this long road?
As Harleys rumble by and choppers thunder overhead
It is the sweet sounds of the bagpipers that I hear instead.
All have come here to pay their respects.
To listen to the story of the brave act I did.
Worry not for me because I'll be all right.
It is my wife who needs comfort
Through these long nights--
Who will teach my boy what is to be a man
Who will be there to hold my little girl's hand.
It is my family that needs you now, for I am at rest.
Let it be known that I worked with the best.
I did not live the longest of lives, nor one of great wealth.
It is the sacrifice I made that put me high upon this shelf,
Treated as a pauper in life but as a king in death.
All I did was my job like so many before.
So when you turn to drink to comfort your way
Remember what it is that I have to say.
When you raise your glass in memory of my name
Know you are my brother for you would have done the same.
It is only we who run toward what others run from
Now I run no more, for my work is done.
As this wooden vessel carries my body through this sea of blue
Listen for the bagpipers and hear what they play
For it is their sweet music that carries my soul today.
To the family of a brother, I can never be more sorry for your loss. We lost a great Man, Father, Husband, and Officer that can and will never be replaced.
Weed,
The conversation we had on the way to 15 will always echo in the back of my mind as a reminder of what a true family man is.

RIP Brother Tome:
“My Brother"
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was idealistic and believed he could make a difference.
He was immensely proud of the uniform and the badge and what they represent.
He felt privileged to be of service to his department, his
community and to his country.
He was a cop.
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was friendly, courteous, and polite, yet firm.
He laughed and joked, but was serious when necessary.
He was competent, trained, and professional.
He was a cop.
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He had a strong sense of right and wrong and became
frustrated when true justice became sidetracked.
He felt the sharp criticism that goes with the job, but he
never wavered.
He stood by and for his fellow officers.
He was a cop.
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He longed for his family during the long hours.
He worried about them during his shifts and the lonely
weekends, holidays and midnights when they were apart.
He felt guilty about the lost time, but knew his calling
and prayed they would understand.
He was a cop.
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was a good son, a loving husband, and a devoted father.
He was dedicated to the profession and cared about the
people he served.
He wanted to do the best job that he could and strived to
be the best he could be.
He was a good citizen and a good neighbor.
He was a cop.
Yes, I did know him.
He was a cop, he was my Brother.

Police Officer David Tome,
Our duty to investigate, record and prepare a report of accidents and crashes along the highway place is one of high risk. Our job, by its very nature, is like none other. While we accept this risk we never expect to die at the hand of people we serve, even though we know not only the potential for this, but also the rampant disregard by many motorists for those who work along the highway. We know about the stated lack of intent, but yet the constant and reckless disregard for safe vehicle operation that exists in some drivers. We know the excuses, the denials, the preoccupations, the refusals to place both hands on the wheel and to concentrate on the roadway ahead. The simple conscious neglect by some drivers of the safe-driving techniques practiced and learned to obtain a license. We know the pain of those dying on the highway; the pain involved to a family involved with a traffic death notification, and we even know the pain of we ourselves dying along the highway. We vividly recall the deaths of yesterday, we bear all the burdens of the deaths today and we cringe at the thought of those deaths we will face tomorrow. Depite this, we continue to do our duty, take the risks, and enforce the law. That you have given your life makes you a valid hero and a noble soldier of the law. The degree of responsibility for those who might be reckless, carelesss or inattentive is for our system of justice to judge and determine. The responsibility to the public we serve as law officers is to enforce the traffic laws as often, as vigorous, as energetic, as specific and as fair as we can. Your death, as regretful and sad as it is, should serve as a motivation factor to all who patrol the highway to promote safety. Sound and reasonable traffic enforcement is not a tool for increasing the so-called quotas, but rather it is for decreasing the cavalcade of carnage along our highways. You shall not have died in vain.

Dear Dodi and Dave's family,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy during this difficult time. Words can not express the sadness I feel for you in your loss. Dave was a great man and a great friend. It seems like only yesterday we were all in high school, not having a care in the world, but just enjoying being young. I will miss him dearly, but am trying to take comfort knowing he is in a better place. A place we will someday meet again. If there is ever anything I can do, I'm here for you. My prayers are with you all!
Dave, this all doesn't seem real to me and I'm sure it never will. I will never understand why "bad things happen to good people", but I guess the man upstairs needed you more. I know when we got into this job, our paths rarely crossed. But when they did, you always greeted me with that smile. Thanks for all the memories. And don't forget, we were 3200MR county champs!! Rest In Peace my Brother, you earned it. Someday we shall meet again.
