Paul made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty while upholding his oath to protect and serve. To me, Paul was a friend, a mentor, and a true hero. Paul embodied everything a Police Officer is, and should be. Paul, I will always be thankful for the training you provided me, the insight you gave me and the wisdom you imparted to me. I'm a better officer and person because I had the honor to serve with you. You will always endure in the hearts of those who knew you as a true hero and the definition of excellence as a human being. Rest in peace my friend.
To Shannon and the kids, You will be in my thoughts and prayers, always.

Sergeant Paul Starzyck,
You have sacrificed you life for another. Such is our lot. When others think of law officers they usually vision the movie version where sudden and tense situations usually end with the law officer having accomplished remarkable feats beyond all comprehension. The real life version of these situations normally places demand on everything a law officer has ever learned and more than a full measure of stress and tension. We are fortunate to have law officers like Sergeant Starzyck who laid down his life rather than swerve from the path of his duty. A legion of law officers who have gone before you await you at the gates of Heaven. Embrace them and enter knowing that you have brought Honor to all who know and love you. Your peers and I render you this final salute. Well done, sergeant...well done.

My wife Carolyn, a supervisory deputy United States Marshal and I wish to express our deep and heartfelt sympathy for the Starzyck family for the terrible loss of sergeant Paul Starzyck. Our sympathy also extends to the members of the Martinez Police Department and his brothers and sisters in the law enforcement profession.
Sergeant Starzyck gave his all so that the rest of us might live in peace and security from harm. It is a measure of a man who believes in the rule of law so much that he is willing to place his own life in jepordy for his brothers and the public. May God bless Sergeant Starzyck and give grace and comfort to the Starzyck family at their time of need. Also to our brothers and sisters in this hazardous profession that we have chosen.
Mrs. Starzyck, I did not know your husband personally but I feel his loss as if he was my own brother, also a police commander. I know you are a deputy sheriff with the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department and share your husbands profession. I'm sure that your brothers and sisters in the CoCo sheriff's department hearts are also broken but will aid and comfort you and your family during this terrible time.
There is no other profession as the one we have chosen. It is truly a calling for those of us who wear the badge and answer the calls for service. I am so very deeply sorry for the loss of your husband. I've lost partners from my time with a police department and the Marshals Service. All hurt to the very marrow of my bone and the scars still are visable. Know that your husband gave his life for something he believed in so deeply and strongly that it was more important than his own life. He died protecting those in his charge and keeping the public safe. He would not have wanted anyone else to take his place.
I'm certain that his last thoughts were of you, his children, his family and his brother officers. His loss will never be forgotten, his place never taken nor his heroic actions ever dulled by time. Your husband, Martinez, California, Police Sergeant Paul Starzyck is our hero and will always be.
With great respect and sorrow, our condolences to the Starzyck family and our brothers and sisters in law enforcement.
