To the man who followed his dreams,
I remember the day FCSO called with the job offer. All of the others that had turned you down were forgotten. You gave your heart and soul to protect and serve and eventually your life. That's the kind of man you were. Until we meet again sweet prince.

Marty,
It seems like only yesterday we were in police academy at Columbus State. It's hard to believe that was almost 18 years ago. You were one of the few that remembered my nickname from back then and called me that when I ran into you at the jail when you first started.

The news of the crash and your death hit me hard. I had a job to do that morning and I did it with thoughts of you and your family weighing heavily on my mind.

You were an awesome person and one of the most dedicated people I have ever known. You will be missed and never forgotten.

Marty,

I only met you when I came to SIU but I feel like I have known you all of my life. You taught me so much in the short time I worked with you and never felt like the new guy. I consider you a brother and a friend and I will make sure we honor you everyday by continuing the battle that we fought together. We will meet again in the kingdom of our god and that will be a wonderful day. I know you will be watching over us everyday and rest peacefully knowing that we will be here for your loved ones and to continue on the great work that you started. Laying you to rest was one of the most difficult days of our lives but it was done with the honor and glory that a great officer deserved. Gone but never forgotten my friend. God Bless you.

To Deputy Martin's wife and son, my heart breaks for you. As you learn how to go on without your husband/father's physical presence, may you find consolation as you draw even closer to each other and share the memories you have of him. Keep him in alive in the stories you tell and in how you live your lives. My prayers to God are for you and for the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.

Marty,
I have already left one of these but being able to in a small way talk to you again is cathartic. We laid you to rest yesterday and it was done with all the tributes which could possibly be given a fallen officer. (to be honest by the end I wouldn’t have been surprised to see a flight of F-16’s in the missing man formation).

Several images and sounds were forever burned into my minds eye during your day. I sat and listened to your friends (some I knew some I didn’t) pay tribute to you. We all gathered and stood in ranks as they carried you out of the church. I will never forget as your casket passed. I was trying to stand straight and true to show everyone my respect and admiration for you. Then as your casket passed your son was close behind carrying your felt hat. I felt my knees start to wobble as what was left of my heart was again clawed from my chest.

A procession fit for a president came next. Three images quickly come to mind from the procession. As we were going along you could see in the distance two fire trucks with their ladders extended across the roadway and a large American flag hanging from between them. Just as I saw this I looked to my right and saw something I will never forget. Several cars had stopped at the intersection we were going through. They of course couldn’t proceed and were just going to get to watch the procession as it passed. Then I saw this man who had to be every bit of 70 yrs old. He had turned his truck off and was standing on the cusp of the intersection at attention saluting as we drove by. I was towards the front of the procession but afterward I spoke with some of those who were part of the civilian cars. It took them 20 minutes after I had passed to reach this man and he was still there at attention and stayed until the tail car had passed. Then 15 minutes later we turned a corner to find a younger man and his 3-4 year old daughter on the side of the road by themselves waving an American flag. All of this was for you and richly deserved.

Once we made it to the cemetery things moved along. Bagpipes, rifles, bugler playing taps rider less horse, and then breaking the silence was the static of a radio. We stood at attention arms raised in our final salute and heard the voice. It was calling your car number. She called again and you didn’t answer. When she dropped tones on you I felt all the air around me disappear as the hundreds of police officers collectively gasped. She gave your car number then your name and badge number and toned you out of service. We collectively sobbed standing proud to have known you and honored to have been a part of your life. Once dismissed everyone stood in place. I know it couldn’t have been for more than 20 seconds but it seemed like an hour. We all knew once we started moving it would be over.

Marty we miss you. Your legacy lives well beyond the confinement of the Sheriffs Office and in that fact we find some solace. I know you understand the need for sadness and reflection. Be assured we will move through this and carry on as you would expect us to. Our best tribute to you by brother is to continue to do things bigger, faster and better.

Marty, its Friday September 12 and everything went as planned yesterday. Blinky did a fantastic job with the arrangements and I had no complaints. The Sheriff's Office and CPD worked great together and did a fantastic service. I checked in with Jody this morning and she is just finishing up some odds and ends, and is still visiting with family. Lori and I are nursing what seems to be a one day FLU....but should be fine after a couple of asprin. You would have love it, except the bag pipes,...I know

The funeral was one of pride and honor. Here are a few things that made me proud and honored......

All the reflection speeches from friends......
The little girl standing on the side of the road with the American flag in her hand.......
The older gentleman at the intersection standing in front of his truck saluting the whole procession.....
The 2 ladder trucks with the American flag hanging that looked bigger than my house........
The 21 gun salute,,,, thats what i use to do in the Army......
The bag pipes when it goes from solo to all of them playing....very intense
Then when they marked for Car 31... That made me fall apart but was a great tribute........
Thanks for the memories
