To the Family of a Hero,
I come to this site everyday to read my husband’s reflections and those of our fellow brothers. Some days it's harder to read them because I know that another wife is left to spend her days and nights alone with no one to comfort her when she wakes up crying in the middle of the night longing to be in his arms. Children left without a daddy to play ball with or get that special hug from. Another father left without a son to continue his legacy and traditions. Another mother is grieving for her child. A child she gave life too and kissed his hurts away. Another friend they can no longer joke around with about a call or hang out with on their days off. A community left without a hero to pick them up when they often stumble and fall. It’s truly amazing how one simple human life has the ability to affect so many. Some who put others before himself and risked everything to protect our communities. I've walked in the path you are walking through now and I wish I could give you some words of wisdom. Each survivor of an officer killed has their own ways of dealing with the pain of their loss. I can't really say that some get through it any easier than others, because none of it is easy. We go through it because we dont have a choice. For those with children, we take on the rolls of mother, father, breadwinner, coach, psychologist, referee, chaufuer and all around handyman. You make schedules and lists. Then turn around and re-write those schedules and make more lists. Sometimes its a little overwelming but we make it work. As each day passes, it adds to our strength. The more strength we build, the easier the roles become. I've come to appreciate three simple words that can sum up what a person's life should be about. Live, Laugh and Love.... LIVE each and everyday as if there is no tomorrow and surround yourself with all the gifts that life can bring. LAUGH at everything including yourself for humor can be found in every situation good or bad, and LOVE with everything you have, you may never get another chance.
For the co-workers, the pain is different but just as real. Those of us who put on the uniform, have a special bond, the likes which no one can understand. We sweat together, bleed together, laugh and joke together and sometimes, during times like these, we shed tears together. We are family, no matter the color of your uniform or the shape of the badge. When one falls, it hurts all of us. It takes someone very special to put on that uniform and face the "ugliness" of this world. I'm sure that your brother was just like my husband, he did it with a smile and if given another chance, he would do this job again. I hope and pray that God lays his gentle hand upon your heart. I pray that he gives you the ability to go back out there and do a job so few are brave enough or have the courage enough to do.
I found a poem that I'm leaving for my husband at the Memorial Wall this coming year. I'd like to share it with you.
I'M THERE INSIDE YOUR HEART
Right now i'm in a different place,
And though we seem apart,
I'm closer than I ever was...
I'm there inside your heart.
I'm with you when you greet each day
And while the sun shines bright,
I'm there to share the sunsets, too...
I'm with you every night.
I'm with you when the times are good
To share a laugh or two,
And if a tear should start to fall...
I'll still be there for you.
And when that day arrives
That we no longer are apart,
I'll smile and hold you close to me...
Forever in my heart.
Below is a card my husband left on my pillow before he left and I thought I would share it with you. Even though at times he seems so far away, he really isn't. He is with you every second of every day. All you have to do is look inside you heart and he's there, sharing everything with you. Take care and may the Lord keep a gentle hand on your shoulder.
It's so hard
for me to be apart from you,
even when
it's only for a short while.
I'll see something
I wish I could share with you,
experience something new
and wish you could be a part of it.
But I hope you know that
even when we're not together,
I'm always thinking of you.
During the day,
you're with me in thought,
so that whenever I see
something I think you'd enjoy,
in a special way
you're sharing it with me.
And at night,
I'll fall asleep dreaming
of how wonderful it will feel
to be back in your arms
where I belong.
Every day that we're apart,
I'm looking forward to when
we'll be together again
so I can show you
how much I missed you...
How much I love you.

Officer Kane was a U.S. Marine in the early 90's. An MP at MCB Quantico, Trooper Kane as we called him was fun to work with, always laughing and cracking jokes. He was a great guy.
He was always locking someone up, if something was going on Lcpl Kane was there.
Too young, too soon.

To the family and friends of Officer Christopher Kane and the members of Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, and most
especially to Chris:
On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condonlences on the grievous loss you have suffered when Chris was tragically killed.
To Chris' family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in the Bay Area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.
Heaven has another hero. In reading his reflections, I can see that Chris was an amazing young man who served his community as a law enforcement officer and his country as a Marine. My son Larry was his brother in green as well as in blue. Semper Fi, Chris ...you served your country well.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the service Chris gave to his community and the citizens of Florida, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 4, 2008

DON'T GRIEVE FOR ME
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free
I'm following the path god laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard him call,
I turn my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Task left undone must stay that way,
I found that peace at the close of the day.
If my parting has left a void,
Than fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss
Ah yes, these things I, too, will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow,
My life's been full, I savored much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, He set me free.
I believe in God and believe I will see you again.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL

As a former Reserve Officer with Jacksonville Sheriff Office I had the opportunity to work with Officer Kane. He always treated the Reserve Officers with respect and dignity. Some officers are just folks with a tin plate on there chest on a power trip. Officer Kane was not. He was into helping anyone that needed help and wanted to advance themselves in whatever field they choose. One did not have to be a Law enforcment officer for Officer Kane to help you! He will be truley misseed.
Attention on deck!! Hand Salute!! Officer Kane deaprting to a better place. You stood your watch with us-- now it is time to stand your watch with the Lord. May Jehovah God bless you, your family and all who stand the watch. And may he guide you to your new home. In Jesus CHrist name!!Amen!!! Return salute!!! Carry on!!!

To the friends and family of Officer Kane, especially his wife and children,
I sat beside Officer Kane's younger cousin on the airplane as he and his parents made the trip to Florida for the funeral. I was so saddened to hear that while I was on vacation, one of Jacksonville's police officers had passed away. What touched me though, was how Officer Kane's cousin spoke of him. He told me what a wonderful man he had been and what a great father he was to his children. He had always admired him and thought of him as a best buddy. I know from my two hour flight that Officer Kane adored his children more than anything. I also know that his children have so much support from their family... including the cousin I sat beside.
It is tragic to lose someone so young, who had dedicated his life to serving others and being a devoted husband and father. I hope it is heartwarming to know how many lives he has touched and how fondly others will remember him.
God bless

To the Family of Officer Kane
Your complete family are in my families prayers during this dark time. My family is just starting to make it thru a lost of our own with the death of my future son in-law Josh Norris. Shawn was taken to early and should of have had more time with you guys. I know words at this time will never stop the hurt, but know your Husband and Dad is not far from you, he is the whisper in the wind, that feeling of being hugged when no one is there, he will always be at your side watching over ever accomplishment and catching ever tear that you guys shed. What has helped my family and may help yours, remember your love ones laugh, his smile and all those things that are unique to him, since they are truly what made him. He is a true hero in every sense of the word and your police family extends it arms to you, if this one from Louisiana can do anything do not hesitate to ask. God bless you and may he give you strength.

Kane, that's what I've always called you. Not so much because it was your last name but because there was a character in Robocop 2 named Kane. Your work ethic reminded me of Robocop. You would take call after call and never complain. You would drive the dispatchers crazy because you would try to clear the whole zone by yourself! You probably could've done it if we (HQ) had let you! :-)
You loved your job. You loved your family. You loved your friends. You were my friend and I will miss you terribly. I can't tell how hurt I was when I found out that you had passed on. The only thing that I could think of was that you will never visit us in the Comm Center again. I will never get to hear any of your jokes anymore. You could always make me laugh even on the worst days on the job.
I will continue to pray for your family, who I've heard so much about. I will be comforted in the knowledge that you are patroling God's heavens. HE's got the best.
In the words of one of my dispatchers, "Zone 2 will never be the same." JSO will never be the same.
D252, job well done. HQ shows you 1082.
Godspeed.
