Mike,
Your love for law enforcement was very clear at the academy. I will miss your smile, just as I miss Sheila’s. The remaining class members of 99C will continue our mission to protect and serve. You will never be forgotten. Tell Sheila hello for me. See you both in Heaven.

I didn't have the privilege of knowing Det. Phillips, but he wore blue and is therefore a brother. All of us in law enforcement feel the pain when one of our fellow brothers or sisters fall, but I'm certainly not feeling what his family, friends, and fellow VBPD officer are feeling right now. Having a family myself, it was heartbreaking to see Mrs. Phillips with her sons standing over her husband's flag draped casket at the funeral yesterday. It was also heartbreaking to see Det. Phillips' numerous friends and co-workers in pain over such a great loss. I can only hope that this immense pain lessens with each passing day and that you can remember what he gave you all while he was walking among us.

VBPD - I know you'll continue to answer the call with honor. Your community is grateful for who you are and everything that you do.

Mike,
Words cannot begin to express how (I and we) all felt Friday morning to awake to the news that another brother and friend had been taken from us. To hear it was you was yet a bigger blow. Aside from partners one encounters on the department while working in a specialty unit, your squad is a close second in relationship building. I only worked with you on one shift for six months, but as most on the department, you worked your way into our lives, literally! You were always a dependable friend who one could count on for non-police needs; sometimes just as a phone call for "tech support" on a plumbing issue. My children played in our yard with your little helpers while you did service calls, never leaving anyone "out in the cold or flooded". You were a great Dad who lived for your kids and tried to make a better life for them (coach!). I really don't know where you found the time, but soon it will be my turn with my own. You will never be forgotten. Your dedication will be missed.

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.

But, Lord, ‘tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh trump of the angel! Oh voice of the Lord!
Blessèd hope, blessèd rest of my soul!

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

Thank you for your service and for your giving heart. We all remember what you did for Val, and what you did for countless others in need. You will forever be remembered not for how you died, but for how you lived. God Bless you and your family.

Narcotics is a tough and demanding assignment, working to nab the worst of the worst. As a result, it is so terribly tragic when another hero falls to the hands of a drug dealer. My prayers and best wishes go out to the family and friends of Michael Phillips. He will be remembered for his dedication and bravery.
