Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Dennis Carl Compton

It is very sad when a law enforcement officer is lost, even more heart breaking when it hits this close to home. Thank you for your service. A teammate mentioned he attended the academy with you and another one mentioned meeting you at a training class. All had kind words. Thank you for your service. My condolences to your family, friends, and co-workers.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I was Dennis' Class Leader during Basic Class 500. We all called him Jay Leno. He was always cracking jokes and having fun. He talked many times how being a Police Officer was his life's ambition. I understand the desire to wear the uniform and serve. It gets in the blood and turns you blue and you can never get away from it. I will miss you brother. You made a difference, you stood between good and evil and said, "Not on my watch!"

Deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dep Compton, and may you take comfort knowing that - like Constable Bailey's murder last year - all of your fellow Lowcountry LEO's will not rest until your killer is brought to justice.
I worked the perimeter for several hours Wednesday morning, along with a massive response of other officers, and one thing which was extremely evident was the huge respect and esteem for this deputy displayed by his colleagues at the scene. I never had the honor to meet him, but hope that his sacrifice will not be forgotten by the citizens he protected and for whom he made the ultimate sacrifice.

RIP, Dep Compton..

First, let me say to the family of Deputy Compton, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to you. I know the pain sometimes seems unbearable. My husband and I have experienced the pain that you are feeling. I wish that I could tell you that it will get better but I would be making a false satement to you.

We lost our only child Officer Shane Miller of the Tabor City Police Dept. on May 15, 2004. He was killed in a high speed chase within 6 hours as a police officer, first day on the job. We as parents will never ever over this.

Our prayers will be with you each and every day. Please put your trust in the Lord because that is the only way that you can survive. I know that you will have lots of friends from the force and family members that will help try and make life more bearable. EMS families stick together during times like this.

My deepest thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Compton's wife, children, family, friends and co-workers. I was married to Alabama State Trooper Brian Nichols EOW 2/17/2002 and I am now married to Washington County Deputy Sheriff Aaron Carpenter. All of your C.O.P.S. family is here for you and hurting for you. We all became a family when our loved ones became police officers and now we have even a stronger bond when one of our family members goes down. We are here for you to help you along this journey you now have joined with us. God bless you all.
