My sympathies to Officer Surles' family, friends and colleagues. May God watch over them all. His chief said it well when he described Officer Surles with the following quote, "Greg held up to that with honor," Turley said. "He was one of our best. He treated the toughest suspects with dignity and respect, and volunteered with numerous programs. I have never known any officer to be more selfless, caring, kind and loving." He treated the toughest suspects with respect and dignity; that says a lot about the officer and the man.

"Thankless Job"

Every night I watch you prepare,
Getting the right style, look, and attitude.
Folding the creases over and over,
Then you have to set the mood.

You are not allowed to be joyous,
Nor are you allowed to lose your cool.
No matter how mind boggling or dangerous the call,
You must respond and deal with all kinds of fools.

The career you have chosen is thankless,
Few people respect what you do,
The benefits and pay aren't much per say,
Yet night after night you walk out that door.

People may say what would he do all that for,
Why would you risk your life as a career?
So our children, family, and friends can feel safe.
Otherwise, a world without law is a world living in fear.

Thank You Officr Surles for your service. RIP!!

Police Officer Kenneth (Greg) Surles,

I read and am saddened by the circumstances of your death. It is a fact that one of our greatest threats in law enforcment is while driving our patrol vehicles and/or being present on the streets and highways. We can never be too alert while we attempt to preserve our life while we perform our duty of preserving the life of others. No amount of training or preparation can totally prevent this potential loss of life or serious injury. It can only be reduced by realizing that trying to keep ourselves safe is primary to keeping others safe. That you have met this terrible fate does not make you anything less than a true hero. You gave your life in the service of others. Nothing is more honorable. Nothing is more in compliance with our sworn duty to protect. And, nothing is more in obeyance with the commandment of our Creator. We who wear a badge and perform the same duties regret your sacrifice, grieve for your loved ones, and will always count you as a fellow soldier of the law.

Pennsylvania State Police

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."
