Dear Officer Francis,
How does one thank a hero ... a person who has dedicated his life to serving his country, his fellow citizens? I live in a Chicago suburb and when I heard the horrible news on T.V. my heart sank. When I read the front page of the newspaper this morning, and saw the picture of one of your brothers in blue, head bowed, as he stood in front of your home ... my heart broke. In the paper, there was the story of a man - you Officer Francis who had already given so much to our country. Viet Nam veteran, Navy SEAL ... then many years serving and protecting citizens of Chicago. The legacy you leave, you and your service will NEVER be forgoten. Like Chicago Police Officer Mike Gordon before you and so many others, you join the ranks of those who have given their all to serve and protect.
I pray that got Almighty, will extend His comforting hand to your family and fellow Chicago Police Officers.
Sincerely,
Tom Jensen
Father of Detective Jared Scott Jensen,

What do you say when something this tragic happens? Normally one would say "I am so sorry for your loss". When a Police Officer is lost those words just aren't enough but it's all that we know how to say. This man put his life on the line for all of us and I am ever so grateful.
We just lost a great man and a great officer. My thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Francis' family and his brothers and sisters in blue.

I did not know Officer Francis, but I respect the 27 years he gave to his department. I think about the number of times he must have been in harm's way before and helped those around him and I wonder why this time. What made that night so different from any other night he went into harm's way, but that's a question that will never be answered. My prayers go out to the family of Officer Francis and the officers of the Chicago Police Department as they prepare to bury one of their best. I'm sure he'll be watching out for the rest of us from his place in heaven.

I am personally mourning this loss, because P.O. Richard Francis was my fellow coworker. I'd like to say that he was a great man and officer. He was kind, funny, and would stand up for what was right. Rick spoke his mind everyday in roll call. I had so much respect for this man.
May you rest in peace Rick. You will not be forgotten.

I knew Rich from his local lunch spot. The Golden Nugget Restaurant at Lawrence & Ravenswood in Chicago. He worked the wagon for many years and just recently was working the squad.
He would bring the girls gifts on their birthdays and he was kind to everyone he met. He will be deeply missed and mourned.
He wore his glasses at the end of his nose and was quick with a joke. He was what you would imagine your grampa to be like.
Please to his family, let you know that we loved him and our prayers go out to you and anyone else who feels the loss of this kind gentleman! God bless you Rich and his family!!!!
