Nick, I recently had the opprotunity to work with you in invetigations while you were on light duty. Until then, I didn't have the pleasure of knowing you very well because you worked graveyards and I work days. I am so glad that I got the chance to work with you because I know now that I would have missed the chance to gain a new friend and an upstanding brother. You were quiet, but you worked hard and you took pride in your work. I'm sad that you are gone, but I know that God has you under his wings now and that brings comfort. God Bless you and your family. We will miss you and think about you often.

Well my brother I know it's time to say goodbye, but I know it's not forever. I'll never forget when you first came on as a Rockie on the graveyard shift. You came a long way brother and ended up being one of the best cops I had the pleasure of working both the streets and Investigations with. So for now I will say goodbye my brother and although you ended your tour of duty with us I know you started a new one and Heaven became safer when you reported for duty. Thanks for eight years of memories no one can ever take away. Pope.

For all of you that are leaving your thoughts for Nick, Melissa and the girls I personally would like to thank you.
I have known and worked with Nick for the past 7 years of his career with the Pueblo PD and it has been nothing less than an honor. As I explain some of the things that made another man so wonderful to me, sit back and think about the same person that means as much to you at your Department.
Nick was the cop that showed up to work and was ready. He would smile, smoke one more outside and then off we would go. He would think about that scum bag that ran from him, when he couldn't catch him and we would go look for him the next night. Nick would remember people and say "hey, I know where he lives" and we would go catch the bad guy. At the end of it all he would think and talk about going camping with his pain in the ass wife Melissa and his two beautiful girls.
Even being senior to Nick, I turned to him as much as he did me. We were partners in every sense of the word. We would meet and talk about work, life, rookies and old Sergeants. We would discuss politics and old flames we had in our past. Nick knew me as much as I knew him. We could go on calls in the middle of a conversation. Book a POS in jail and after clearing, pick back up were we left off.
Nick will be truly missed by all of us on the PPD. He will be missed by the special officers that work when no one else wants to. The officers that say goodnight to their loved ones and leave for work. The ones who patrol the streets while everyone sleeps.
Nick passed too soon. May his memory live on within each of us. May the times we spent so happy being together and doing what we love be what we live for today and tomorrow.
Rest in peace Officer Nick Heine. You live on within each of us.

My condolences to the wife, children, mother, and other family left behind.
As a friend of Nick's who spent a lot of time with him through high school and into our younger adult years, I can tell everyone reading this that Nick knew what he wanted to do, protect and serve, long before most of those in our circle of friends. It wasn't a decision he discussed endlessly, it was a quiet, unwavering decision made while most of those in our age group pursued far less constructive ambitions.
I am incredibly sorry for the Pueblo P.D. and the citizens of Pueblo. You have lost a good officer and an even better man. Rest in Peace, my friend, and please tell Bobby how much we miss and love him.

I Never Dreamed it Would Be Me
(By Sgt. George Hahn, LAPD, Ret., engraved on the Peace Officer Memorial in CA, across from the west steps of the Capitol Building.)
I never dreamed it would be me,
My name for all eternity,
Recorded here at this hallowed place,
Alas my name, no more my face.
"In the line of duty," I hear them say;
My family now the price will pay.
My folded flag stained with their tears;
We only had those few short years.
The badge no longer on my chest,
I sleep now in eternal rest
My sword I pass to those behind,
And pray they keep this thought in mind.
I never dreamed it would be me,
And with heavy heart and bended knee;
I ask for all here from the past,
Dear God, let my name be the last.
Rest in Peace Brother, you will be missed.
