Reflections for Police Officer Nicholas Karl Heine

Godspeed Sir...Go in Peace

Ptn. R. Murphy

June 26, 2008

Whenever we ran calls that required police "back up" I was always glad to see Nick was one of the officers responding. I knew at that point that he had our back and we could concentrate on the task at hand rather than be concerned with my crews safety. It is my hope that when my career is over, those that are still here will remeber me as someone that always "had their back". That is the way I will always remember NIck.

My deepest thoughts and prayers are with Officer Heine's wife, children, family, friends and co-workers. I was married to Alabama State Trooper Brian Nichols EOW 2/17/2002 and I am now married to Washington County Deputy Sheriff Aaron Carpenter. All of your C.O.P.S. family is here for you and hurting for you. We all became a family when our loved ones became police officers and now we have even a stronger bond when one of our family members goes down. We are here for you to help you along this journey you now have joined with us. God bless you all.

I knew you and your mother from work. Then I attended my grandsons football games and you are one of the coaches. Not because you have a child on the team (you didn't) but just because you love kids and wanted to be part of the game and team. You were an inspiration to the kids and everyone else that knew you. You will be truly missed. May you be in Heaven with all the other angels. You are off duty now. Play.

Nick, I didn't have the opportunity to work with you in Patrol. I am glad I got to know you better while you were on light duty in Investigations. Your keen insight was evident in your investigative skills. It was truly a pleasure working with you. I know your Mother Pat was so very proud of you as all of us here are. You are a great Officer. You will be greatly missed.

I was hired on with Nick & about six other Officers on January 8th, 2001.

Nick & I shared a Quad on Graveyards our Rookie Year and we handled many calls together. One call in particular that always sticks in my mind involved a College student at the University that stabbed a campus security officer.

Nick & I caught the assailant, who was under the influence, and we fought him for a good three minutes to get him into custody. That was just one of many instances where I knew that Nick could be counted on during any incident to be there and do what was necessary for a safe & successful outcome.

Nick & I also had the opportunity to spend what little down time we had to chat about everything from the job, to our spouses, & our children. My wife, Melissa (also a Veteran P.P.D. Officer) attended Nick & Melissa's wedding, and had the joy of watching their daughter Nichole turn a year old.

Nick was always proud of his daughters and his mother Pat, and loved them even more. As the dedicated cop that Nick was on the job, he was equally dedicated in his pursuit of being a GREAT father & husband.

I'm proud of the Cop Nick was, and my heartfelt condolences go out to Melissa, Nichole, Becca, Pat, & the rest of his family, may you find Peace with God in this time of sorrow.

Rest In Peace Nick. I'll never forget you!

It was a privilege to know Nick on a professional and personal level. Nick can be described as a professional and a caring family man. May the peace of God be with Nick and his entire family today, tomorrow and always.

I met Nick seven years ago when he was a brand new rookie on the streets. At first Nick had a hard time because he never met anyone that he did not like or could not find good in or have sympathy for. As he progressed in his career he still had those qualities but realized that he had a job to do and as in most cases that the police are called to assist with there was at least one person that needed to be delt with in a mannor that was forgian to him. After a short time I left the streets and only occasionally ran into to him on big calls. I was always impressed each time I showed up on one of his calls at the way he treated everyone, fairly and justly without being influenced by others. I wish I had known Nick more personally than just on a professional level. He was a good man and a good cop and will be missed by many, rest in peace brother.
