It is a sad day because you departed. You truly deserve to be in a better place. If only we could even the score and relieve some of the pain of those you left behind. You are such a positive role model that has helped to change many lives and install encouragement to those who appeared to be unchangeable. I know that the heavens above will be just as delighted to have you as many of us were here. My prayers go to your family. May your family be strengthened in understanding that everything happens for a reason. We may never find that reason but we must trust that the Lord has a plan even through trying times like this. I only learned that because you were one of the few people in my life that helped me get through mine.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

The following is a Fallen Officer's Prayer that was found while a Pueblo Police Officer visited the N.Y.P.D. Museum & Ground Zero in 2005 Officer's Prayer
Fallen Officer’s Prayer
I Never Dreamed It Would Be Me.
My Name For All Eternity.
Recorded Here At This Hallowed Place.
Alas, My Name, No More My Face.
'In The Line of Duty' I Hear Them Say.
My Family Now The Price To Pay.
My Folded Flag Stained With Their
Tears.
We Only Had Those Few Short Years.
The Badge No Longer On My Chest.
I Sleep Now In Eternal Rest.
My Sword I Pass To Those Behind And
Pray They Keep This Thought In Mind.
I Never Dreamed It Would Be Me.
And With A Heavy Heart And Bended
Knee, I Ask For All Here From The
Past...
Dear God, Let My Name Be The Last.
What a tragedy to lose another Police Officer to the hands of another person who had no value for life especially to someone else's.
Our prayers and our deepest condolences go to the family and all who knew Officer Owens
GOD BLESS YOU ALL

Senseless. My heart goes out to Officer Owens' family and co-workers. For him to die over some guys drinking in a garage is unbelievable. May God hold Officer Owens' kids in the palm of his hand for the rest of their lives. Rest in Peace Derek.

Derek was a dedicated son, husband, father, mentor, and friend. He was kind, generous, and compassionate. He always took the time to make sure everyone else was okay. His smile and laughter brightened the saddest days. Derek was an overprotective "big brother" at times, but, I always understood and respected his concerns. It is so hard to say goodbye to such a wonderful person. I thank God most for allowing Derek to be a part of our life. They say God takes the good ones first; and so He did! Derek always kissed my daughter on the forehead and told her that she would be "Somebody" one day. Her "Uncle Derek" encouraged her to continue being a good student and athlete because he believed that it would take her far in life. Derek is very much loved by many and will be greatly missed. CPD lost a GREAT officer! We lost a Great man!
