Lord, have mercy. Where would we be without Officer Owens and so many others who serve day in and day out selflessly and with a willingness to sacrifice their very lives for us? I am grateful for all that Officer Owens did and gave, ultimately his life. My prayers to his wife and children, extended family, friends, and fellow officers.

My prayers for Derek Owens & Family: how many times our wishes and our dreams and our prayers for our young officers lay hidden under our breath? How many times have our family's looked at us, heart in their throat, hands in their pockets, a smile on their face, just wanting to say...I HOPE you never lose your sense of wonder..It's risky breathing, let alone needing, trusting, reaching out. Life is the leap of faith, the bold declaration of HOPE...

To day we have lost yet another brave young officer in our never ending war on crime. Parents and family cry, a wife and children cry and the many brave men and women Officer Owens worked with in this community cry,and yet another name will be added to the memoral wall.

But today, tomorrow and next week we will continue our battle, we will put on our uniforms get in our cars and go back to work.

Why, because we took an oath to serve and protect, and to us a oath means something. We remain the thin blue line that stands between good an evil, right and wrong but we cannot do it alone.

It's time the people and politicians of this city , this county ,this country come together and support us in this WAR. Wars in far away lands will in time end as all wars do. But ours is a never ending war. A war on our soil, and on our streets that we must win.

My condolances to Chief McGrath and the men and women of the Cleveland Police Department. I know first hand what you are going through. Ive been there.

Daniel W. Pukach, Chief
N.E.O.R.S.D, Chief CCSO.Ret.

God bless Officer Owens and his family. These are dangerous jobs we have in public safety. Much comfort to those who knew him and those who served with him can come from knowing he gave his all for his community, doing a job I am sure he looked forward to performing every shift.
