It was just Friday when we last spoke. I had some good text jokes to send you. . . but you'll never get'em now. You were one cool dud and I'm still in shock over this mess. Why did you have to chase that #@% ? Because that's who we are. The one's who want to get the garbage out of the streets. Only this time the price was way too high. Some may say you died with honor. I say you lived with it.
You and your will always be in my prayers D. God Bless.

Angels In Blue"
He worked the holidays and weekends,
away from family and friends.
To keep this peace for you and me.
Then one day he paid the price, he gave his life.
You've done well my friend, patrolling these earthly streets.
Now it's time to walk on Heaven's beat.
The next time you see a Police Officer or two,
remember they are one of God's Angels in Blue.
And God said; "Blessed are the Peace Makers

Not only my neighbor.. My family always felt safe at night sitting out on the deck or front porch on those summer nights. Dereck an awesome roll model for my 16 year old son Jeremy who looked up to Derek daily and giving him stern advice about staying out of trouble; cracking jokes as we took out the trash on Fridays and often talked about our upcoming graduation from grad school". How, when my family moved in he and wife Erica and children welcomed us. He and wife would always allow our children to play together and they all would get excited when he would come home in the squad car and ring the siren. Sharing the fish I caught during the summer months and he always checking on us all that lived on the street. More than a dear neighbor, husband, and father he was a friend.
