Reflections for Police Officer Randal David Simmons

R.I.P Brother Randal.

I will never forget the day I stood on the corner of La Brea and Slauson waiting for you to come by, so that I can salute you.

I hope that a young man will give me the same respect I gave you,if I ever die in the line of duty when I become sworn.

Officer Simmons - You were the first to fall after I walked away from LAPD in Oct. 2007, after 30 years. I still get the L.A. news via the internet here in Colorado. I remembered you. I know people who knew you. I did my best to hear them out, and to offer words of comfort...from 1000 miles away. I grieved your loss.

From my CNT training I know you were pulled off the containment to become a negotiator with the "Rainbow Man" when he took his hostage at the hotel near LAX. You helped save the life of his hostage, through your words and your vast knowledge of Scripture. Our heavenly Father, surely, had no better modern-day earthly representative than you, Sir.

I hope that that God, your SWAT/Metro brothers & sisters, the Department, and the City never fail in their support of your surviving family.

Thanks for your service to the people of Los Angeles. May God, too, grant you eternal rest and may His perpetual light shine upon you.

For Police Officer Randal D. (Randy) Simmons:

Not too many law officers stand taller than Randy. He is the epitomy of what courage and bravery is when it comes to policing the vermin and the scum that inhabits our streets. The battle against drugs, and the misery it brings, is on-going and requires fortitude and commitment beyond all description. Randy, regretfully, has demonstrated for all of us what we all must be ready to sacrifice for a better life for our children.

We pray for his family, friends, co-workers and all who care about him. We pray they are reaching-out for one another the moment help is needed.

I am proud to render Officer Randy Simmons a final salute.

Hi, Bro

This weekend marks two years since that fateful night. Your Photograph generated much discussion upon my Face book (FB) Site. Several within the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Family have used Your Photographs as Their FB Default Photograph.

However, after receiving comments from Folks around the world, it is quite obvious that You are missed by far more than those of us from within the LAPD Family.

Perhaps, this will be the Year that I can finally find the Strength to visit Your Grave Site....(Sigh)

Randy,
It saddens me to think of your family without you for another Christmas. I know you remain with them in their hearts and in the way they lead their lives. You affected so many that way.

For all the years we played as DB's on the LAPD Centurions, the time working together in 77th, the friendship, fellowship and respect you gave, I thank you.

For the laughs: at Miramar Naval Base spraying random teammates with fire hydrants we "borrowed" from the BOQ's while training there; the time I drove you home from the hospital after your SE Vice shooting. I hit a abandoned spare tire on the fwy with my little VW Bug. After we finished yelling and bouncing around from lane to lane and came to rest on the side of the freeway you looked at me, your ankle still heavily bandaged and deadpanned, "I think I'll walk home from here."
For the support you gave me at Scripts Hospital while Lou was lying in that bed. We hadn't seen each other in years yet it felt just as it always did.
And finally, for the last words you ever spoke to me during our last phone call, "I pray for you every week Leonard." Thank you. I pray for you and your family, Peace to you and them.

Just had the pleasure of watching your son speak. He related his love of the Lord, and commitment to success. He is a genuinely remarkable young man. You and your wife have raised an exceptional young man. I know the pride you must have as you watch him mature and grow. Hope you have had the pleasure of meeting my friends who share their place in heaven with you. God Bless the Peacemaker's for they shall inherit all of the Lords blessings!

Tragedy and tears seem to be all on this site at the first glance, but when you look deeper you see heroism, love, and sacrifice. Truly you and your fellow officers are the salt of the earth. God bless, and may you know that your loved ones are in my thoughts and prayers.

Forgive me for missing the anniversary of your E.O.W., but I felt as though I could not continue to read about so many tragedies. I now realize the visit each day to leave a word of encouragement and hope to the loved ones of others, helps me to remember that I am not alone with my pain and heartbreak. So may I say to your friends and loved ones that my thoughts and prayers are with them now and always. Continue to keep watch over them and those still out on patrol and may they know you will never be forgotten.

To Officer Randy Simmons and his loved ones:

On this the first anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.

My heart is with all family members who call you beloved. They are all in my thoughts and prayers today.

Randy, you rescued us, saved our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Officer Simmons. I am so humbled by your valor and courage.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Randy gave to his community and the citizens of California, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 7, 2008.

-----------

You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he lived,
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared,
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember him and only that he is gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on,
You can cry & close your mind be empty & turn your back,
Or you can do what he would want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

I never had the honor of meeting Officer Simmons but everything I have read tells me that he was a good officer and a good person in general. I want to be a homicide detective with LAPD and it brakes my heart when I look at all the lists of fallen officers because those men and women are people that I will never have the pleasure of meeting and working with. I can honestly say that I would give my life to help just like them to make the streets of LA a better place.

Hi, Bro:

Not a week has gone by since that tragic night, that someone or something has not reminded me of You. Of course I had to mention You in my "LAPD Farewell Letter."

You are probably pulling "Double-Duty," coordinating security for the Gates to Heaven, while also keeping an eye on the flock of youth who You ministered to and who You inspired back here in South Los Angeles.....
