Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Dustin Shawn Duncan

Dustin 411 you will be missed. I still can't believe it. You were always smiling and fun to work with. You knew where every street and house in LeFlore County was and could give directions faster than dispatch or 911. My prayers will be with your Momma and Dad. We love you man.

You had no pre warning that your tour of duty here was over and of being promoted to God's Police Department. As you have joined all your brothers and sisters of the badge who have gone before you enjoy the love and company of our savior. You will not be forgotten by your brothers and sisters here and your love of your family and friends will always be remembered with affection. Rest in Peace brother.

Dustin,
I couldn't believe what I was told. It can't be true, it's got to be a joke! But no one would be that cruel, and the reality was that you were gone. All day I thought about the fun times we had with our group at the academy. The night that we went to the sushi bar with Kristi, boy if you couldn't tell we were from Southeastern Oklahoma nothing would. Trying the food, those are just some of the memories that I will always cherish about you. If only everyone could be as caring and giving as you. If anyone was lucky enough to call you friend, then you were always there for them, no matter what was asked of you. I don't know what this world is going to be like without you, I don't know what I will be like not being able to see you smile and have a laugh. I am honored to have been able to call you my friend and to share fun times together. Now I have two friends protecting heaven's gate and watching over your family, friends and your brothers and sisters in blue. Don't let Danny talk you into racing up there, because I can only imagine the car you will have. Don't worry about your family, rest assured that your law enforcement family will care for them no matter what. God Speed to you Dustin and now you can rest and the rest of your brothers and sisters will take over your watch. I will miss you more than words can tell.

With much love and respect,
Officer Mary King (or as you called me, Mert)

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
