"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Matt, I just wanted to leave a note for you to let you know that we miss you. So many other people have said it before and it is so true, when you were around you lit up the room. We always knew when you were around we would leave in a better mood and laughing. You were a great dancer and so much fun to be around. God is lucky to have you there and you are missed so much by so many people. I don't think I have ever met anyone with so much life and so much to give to every single person that they met as the way you did. You are wonderful and for those of us that knew you we suffered a great loss. You will ALWAYS live in our hearts!!!! Hope you are watching over us. We miss you everyday and pray for the healing of your family. Rest in peace my friend and hope to see you again someday!!

he was a real good friend, gave me his monte carlo before he went into the army but the one thing most memorable about matt was when my dad, Frank Trongo and myself as well, caught him numerous time sneaking back into his bedroom window before his parents woke up in the morning. yes, all these great times but now he has passed. his memory will live on with me, his parents, family and friends. we'll see you again in the near future.

Matt, you had a passionate and fun-loving heart and a pure and beautiful soul. The two years that I knew you was a real pleasure for me. I will miss your late night texts, your goofy comments and emails but most of all dancing with you. I love the passion for dance we shared so much - late nights to the beach just to practice in the sand. It seems so wrong that you are gone. Your passion for life was addicting and you touched so many people by bringing joy to their lives. I love you and hope you are happy and are watching over us still. You are one of the few people that I know who has past that I full 100% sure has moved on to a better place. This world is a little duller without you and heaven is a brighter because of you. God Bless. Miss you always and forever my Matt Atttack. XOXO

I have agonized over what to write and when to write it here. First, on behalf of the entire family, thanks so much for words of support. It has meant so much to us, it has meant so much to me.
I've lost my one and only sibling, one thing is for sure- he left this world doing what he loved and what a send-off he got for his funeral, 4 mile procession that travelled 130 miles, and the thousands of people who gave us hugs and shared stories with us. My mom says it best when she told someone that we cry for three minutes, but then end up laughing for five. Matt was passionate about giving back to the community, and he was soooooo funny!! Special thanks for everyone who travelled hundreds of miles to be with us during this time- family, friends and countless Law Agencies. For those who could not make it to the funeral, my 11 year old son said a few words. He said, "Matt always gave 110%- whether he was acting like a gorilla or working as a Cop." And that is so very true. And I miss my baby brother. I love you all and thanks again.
