Reflections for Police Officer Matthew Barret Thebeau

Rest in Peace. It is hard when you see a fine young officer leave us. But we shall never forget him and all those that ended their watch. Nemo Me Impune Lacessit

The love of my life left for work tonight dressed all in blue with a black band across the badge he so proudly wears. He knows I am afraid for him every time he leaves for work, but we don’t talk about that. I know he loves what he does and would do it even if he didn’t get paid for it. I love him and don’t add to his burden. Like always, we say, “I love you” and I remind him to be careful and safe. I know he is careful, but that may not always be enough. I always have that fear when I watch the door close behind him that I won’t see him walking back in tomorrow. But, tonight I cried when I heard the lock click home. It is harder to keep that fear in the back of the brain and out of the light because we have lost one of our own this week. The loss of such a terrific young life, so bright and full of promise tears through our law enforcement family with a kind of pain that no one outside the life can truly understand. In all our hearts that young man stands in the same place in the soul as my young man and someone else’s young woman or brother, uncle, father, mother, husband or wife. Officer Thebeau’s shift mates will go to work as always, but there is an empty seat in briefing to remind them that life is too fleeting and no one is invincible. They will think of their families at home - always afraid of that phone call or knock on the door. Then they will go out and do their jobs in spite of fears for safety and for family and without concern for cop bashers and inconsiderate bloggers, because that is what heroes do. Their families will continue to love and support them because that is what we do. In some small way we can be part of fighting the good fight. On Thursday, there will be speeches to honor our fallen brother officer because we are proud of his honor, integrity and sacrifice. There will also be many prayers that it will at least another 14 years-or longer- before another such sacrifice is made.
God Bless Officer Matt Thebeau and his family and friends!

I cannot help myself but to feel a sense of deep loss for my Brother Matthew Thebeau. I have learned one thing in life and that is out of a tragic event, we can find something glorious & wonderful...We got to share our lives with Matthew and he was called to serve the community along with us, with dedication, love, & honor.

My thought & prayer to the family and my fellow brothers & sisters of the Corpus Christi Police Department.
