Reflections for Detective James Merry Walker
I was cleaning out an old box of keepsakes from my old department after retirement. I came across a plaque from the MPD FOP, thanking me for my contribution in catching Det. Walker's killer. I was the first officer to arrive on the scene. I was in the area, heard the shots ring out and was there in seconds. I apprehended a subject fleeing the scene on foot and detained him for detectives. That subject, although not the shooter, was key in identifying the shooter. As a young rookie cop, this was the case that really contextualized the reality of this job for me. Det. Walker was not on duty, but he was still a cop. He did what a cop needed to do in that situation and set a standard of bravery, vigilance and decisive action that I carried with me throughout the rest of my career. His death is a solemn reminder that life is precious and can be gone in an instant, especially for those called to do this job. It reminds us to hug our loved ones a little tighter and live with purpose and love. James, although we never met, your sacrifice left a mark on me that I will carry forever. You are loved and will never be forgotten.

He was my Uncle-In-Law. I was 7 years old and still remember the funeral today at 19. This has since destroyed my Aunt mentally which has affected my family since, but I’ve learned that there’s nothing we can do but move on. There’s not much I can remember of him, but what I do remember is even though as a cop, he looked like he wouldn’t hurt a fly. I wish he could’ve had to chance to watch me and my brother grow up but unfortunately that was robbed from both him and I. 12 years later I can say I forgive his killer, but understandably I know my Aunt does not. RIP James Walker.

Still surreal that this is 2020 and I can remember coming to the scene as if it was yesterday. This is unreal in some way that we were talking to each other the night before. You are by forgotten.

I was already retired when we lost this brother, so I didn't personally know him. But he lost his life doing his job, which is running into danger to serve others. A COP is NEVER off-duty. Our sworn oath to serve others DOESN'T allow it. We have sworn to protect and serve no matter what the cost. This Brother is the perfect example. He paid the ultimate price!! May God keep you in his loving care. RIP My Brother in Blue.

I didn't know you brother officer, however your memory will live on with me. It pains me when an officer is taken from us by the senseless act of a coward, it's doubley painfull when the officer is from my former department. Rest in God's Peace!

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 4th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for solace for all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever.
Rest In Peace
