I am the mother of a MDTA officer my thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. The day my son graduated from the academy I looked up to heaven and said God my job is done I raised a fine young man who I love with all my heart but he is in your hands now please watch over and protect him. For reasons beyond our understanding the Lord had other plans for Coutney. Even though he was taked from his family way to soon the impact he had on those who loved him was immense. Be strong and have faith and know that the MDTA family will always be there for you.

God Bless you

i went to grade school (st. matthew's) with courtney, who was already known as spanky, and who was already the class cut-up. it was nice to hear that he kept his sense of humor into adulthood. i remember him fondly, and though we did not stay in touch, i am deeply saddened to hear of his death. my heartfelt sympathy to all of his family and friends.

"People are often self-centered and unreasonable. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.

The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.

For, you see, in the end it is between you and God. It never was between you and them anyway."

I wish I could say that I had gotten to know you better. However, I can say that the few times that we did cross paths, your smile and personality were infectious. I was working that terrible night and I keep wishing that I could have done more. I hope your family knows that we all did everything in our power, that God must have bigger plans for you. Help me keep watch over our guys and know that you will never be forgotten. RIP, my friend.

Courtney,

You were family to each and every one of us at the Authority, and words cant even begin to express the amount of pain in our hearts. I know that you're up there, watching down, making sure that everything will be alright, but its knowing that you're in a better place that keeps us going.
It was your bravery that will never be forgotten.

About 2-weeks-ago Courtney and I used the same gas station and had a long detailed conversation about the agency. He was very content at his position. I later found out that he told me at least one thing he had not shared with some who had seen him more regularly than I had. Approximately one week before the incident that took his young life, while on-duty, he stopped at the police station to use the restroom and I joked that he was off-post. Courtney said, " I just came over to holler." We shook hands and he spoke to others before returning to his post. I did not know that would be the last time I spoke to him. Since he left us, I had the chance to meet his family and I feel like I have new family members. Additionally, I never knew that so many people I had known in the past were connected to Courtney's family. Courtney allowed us to meet once again. I thank God for allowing these "reunions." My prayers for love, strength and guidance will continue to go with you forever. Greg

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Dear Family/friend's of Corp.Brooks:

I am deeply sorry for the loss of such a good officer and friend. I first met Officer Brooks in 1996 and I found him to be one of the nicest cops that I had the pleasure to meet. He was handsome, kind, hard working and a 'real big' jokester! I remember the time when I had a huge crush on one of the other officers. I use to work the graveyard shift at Nathan's restaurant at BWI with the late Ms. Grace who died of cancer in 2003. I explain to Officer Brooks that I had writing this other officer a poetic letter and that this guy treated me rudely. Corporal Brooks used to tease me about always running to the back of the restaurant and hiding in the kitchen whenever I saw the other officer coming. Oneday he decided to play a joke on me by pulling his hat down to cover most of his face and walking on the ball of his feet to make himself look taller so that I would think that it was the other officer. When I saw him coming I took off running for the back of the store. Officer Brooks just walked into the back of the store and lifted up his hat to show his face. He was laughing so hard at how silly I was acting that it made me laugh out embarrassment. He used to come and order a box of his favorite cereal (Fruit Loops). He would tell me and my co-workers Carol and Ms. Grace to save him several boxes. He loved Fruit Loops cereal so much that Carol and I affectionately nicknamed him Officer Fruit Loops. Oneday Corp. Brooks came in during his break to order his cereal and talk to me. He told me that the only way I will ever get over being embarrassed by the other officer was to stop hiding in the kitchen. My co-worker Ms. Grace agreed and she made me work out front. Corporal Brooks came into the store later with this other officer and I thought I would pass out. I looked over at Officer Brooks who had one of the cutest mischievous smiles on his face. He gave me a look that said, What are you going to do now girl?! I thought about the advice he had given me, took a deep breath and took the man's order for the soup of the day. I was still a really shy person at 25/26yrs old, but Officer Brooks helped me to get pass it. He was cool like and that why so many people loved him. Once you met Officer Courtney Brooks you knew that police officers were just as normal/down to earth as everybody else. I loved hearing Officer Brooks talk about how much he loved his oldest daughter. She was his only child at that time and he would talk about how much he wanted to have a son oneday. I could tell that he loved children and I knew in my heart that he would be just as good to his future children as he was to his oldest daughter. I had not seen Officer Brooks in awhile, but my husband Raoul Fonseca who works for the MAA told me that he had paid us both a compliment when he said, "I can understand why you married Kathy and had all those kids!" It was his way of saying I was beautiful. That was Officer Brooks for you, a real charmer. When I saw the news on New Year's Day I had mixed feelings. I was happy to know that he had found love again and was blessed with two more beautiful children, but sadden to learn that the selfish; and self-destructive behavior of one person had robbed him of his life. I will always remember Corporal Brooks and I pray that his oldest daughter will share/alway remind her younger siblings of how great of a man their father Corporal Courtney Brooks was in life. God Bless all of his family and friend's; and remember to give God thanks for the 40years that he gave our dear friend. Remember to celebrate his life and not the date of his death. Give God praise when he blesses you to see another day at the end of your workshifts. Appreciate each other more than ever before. God bless you Corporal Brooks may you rest in peace. I hope Ms. Grace welcomes you to heaven by telling you that there's an abundant supply of Fruit Loops!

Love,

Kathy Fonseca & family
