My heart goes out to the family of officer Chris Nicholson. Nicholson was a dedicated police officer who loved his job and would go out of his way to help anyone. I proudly had the opportunity to talk to chris hours before his death and he said " if I don't talk to you before the holidays, have a good christmas and I will talk to you later..... I know you are still with us in spirit and watching over your brothers. We will all miss you deeply. R.I.P brother we will never forget your bravery and dedication to the town of Smithsburg....

Family Statement from the family of Police Officer Christopher Nicholson:
Christopher's family is very proud of having the privilege of being blessed with Christopher as a very loving son All Christopher ever wanted, since he was a little boy, was to be a peace officer. He was proud and felt privileged to serve his community and fellow man. Christopher overcame many obstacles in achieving this goal. Let this be Christopher's legacy and revere in his memory as a man always there ; not to hurt; but always there to help, protect and serve, and be a true peace officer. Hardly a day ever passed that Christopher would not call his Mother and Grandma, to make sure they were okay.
As we celebrate this Christmas season, and rejoice in the birth if our Savior, the Prince of Peace, remember Christopher as one who upheld these values in support of us all. Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers, as we also pray for the families of two children without a mother or father, and another family whose son has turned away from the light and fallen into darkness. Peace be with you all.

23 rd Psalm for Law Enforcement
By Tom Bradley
18 December 2007
The Lord is our leader, he provides all our needs.
He gives us comfort, in life’s still moments.
He renews our spirits; He guides us through safe paths, all in His Holy name.
Even as we walk, drive or fly through the streets of evil, we fear no harm, for He is with us.
His rod and His staff look over and protect us. They bring us peace of mind.
You prepare a feast of love before us, even in the face of the evil ones.
You anoint our heads with Your wisdom; Your discernment leads us in safety.
Only Your goodness and love pursues us, for all the days of our mission.
Surely we shall dwell in Your heavenly Kingdom, keeping Your faith in our hearts for ever.
As you now serve in God's house of law enforcement hero's know your name is forever inscrolled in gold in the hearts of all your brothers and sisters in the badge you have left behind. Farewell brother, rest in peace.

God bless you, Chris. I know our Heavenly Father will continue to watch over your family and girlfriend during this time of grief. I only wish I could have gotten to know you better during our several brief occasions of backing each other up over the past year and a half, but your love of the job was always obvious. Just a few weeks ago, I visited the final resting place of another hero and friend, Trooper Larry Small (EOW 03-10-87). I'm sure Larry has already welcomed you to your new eternal home. Thank you for your bravery. Rest in peace, brother.

To the family of Officer Nicholson:
I ask you to define a hero. A man distinguished by exceptional courage, nobility and strength. Officer Christopher Shane Nicholson, your son, was every bit of a hero Wednesday night. I can not think of any other word to best describe him then as a hero, for he gave his life trying to protect his town of Smithsburg from an extremely dangerous man and his efforts went far above and beyond the call of duty. He demonstrated great courage, strength and nobility in his efforts and you should no doubt be very proud of your son.
The badge that your son wore meant he was more than just part of a police force, or more than being a defender of the law. It meant that he was part of a brotherhood, and that he and you, were part of a family. This family that you belong to runs deeper then just blood, it is the bond that every single policeman and their families share. I think I speak for everyone when I say that the pain of this loss is felt by every single policeman and the families of those protecting the law. His spirit will live on in every single officer of the law, along with all those who were so heartlessly struck down in the line of duty that came before him. Your son will be remembered forever as a hero and nothing less.
I wrote this to you to let you know that you are not alone during this time of loss. It is felt by everyone that is part of the law enforcement family. For my dad, he has lost a brother and a friend in the line of duty, and it has affected him and every single one of his colleges greatly. It has affected my family and me very heavily also. I have seen my dad get dressed in his uniform and put on his badge every day since I can remember. Not only did I fear for him everyday, but I feared for everyone that he worked with. Wednesday one of my fears were realized and it saddens me greatly that this had to happen to a man just doing his job and trying to protect the rest of us from potential harm. I did not have the pleasure of meeting your son other than on two or three occasions, however those times that I did talk to him he was a very kind, and respectable man. It pains me to see someone so kind and so willing to put himself in the line of danger to protect the rest of us, lose his life. This is said with a very heavy heart, that I am truly and utterly sorry for your lose and you are not alone. Your son was a great man, a hero, and now a legend in my mind, and in the mind of everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him, and even those who did not. He will be remembered forever, and his spirit will live on to protect those who protect the law, as he did with such brilliance.
With the heaviest of hearts,
Brandon Mark Knight
