Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Vu Nguyen
I pray that our Lord protects your family and friends during this tragic time. Another police officer is murdered just trying to do his job, what a shame. Rest in peace my friend, you've earned it!

Yesterday around 2PM on my way to the Bay Area, I was suddenly aware of dozens of sheriff cars, sheriff motorcycles on the fast lane of the freeway. My heart sank knowing something terrible must be happening. Later on I sadly heard about the shooting and subsequent passing of Deputy Nguyen. God bless this fine hero who died protecting the public. My sincere condolences and prayers go out to his family. He will always be remebered for the hero he is.

RIP Brother. I did not know you but still consider you family. You sacraficed all for the better of the community without due regard to your own safety as all Law Enforcement Officers do. You will be greatly missed but not forgotten and your service will always be greatly appreciated.

Vu was a dear friend to our family for many years. The sadness we feel at his passing cannot be expressed with words. The citizens of Sacramento are very lucky to have had him working to keep our streets safe of their behalf. We are even luckier to have been able to call him friend. We love you Vu and miss you terribly already. God Bless.

I am grief striken by our tremendous loss. While traveling on Hwy. 50 yesterday, I passed armored vehicles and was immediately consumed with the fear that a life or lives had been taken. I tuned in to the local news channel and learned that an officer had been mortally wounded. When the Sheriff's Department identified the fallen officer, my heart fell heavy. I was lucky to have worked with Vu through the Sacramento County Probation Department many years ago. Vu provided the perfect model of leadership, vision, ethics, integrity, and citizenship law enforcement agencies and personnel strive for and to be. I remember Vu leaving the probation department to begin his career with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department. Vu left a huge void and was dearly missed. I would like to express my condolences to Vu's family, friends, all colleagues, and to the community in the passing of an American hero. Although I haven't had the pleasure of working with Vu in many years, I often think about his character, values, and unwavering leadership in the face of difficulty.

My sinking heart goes out to Vu's family and Sacramento County Sheriff Department - please accept my deepest and most sincere sympathy. My past brief experiences with SCSD deputies in Sacramento has always been outstanding - a group of great people and professionals. I also just learned that SCSD had arrested a 16-year old male, possibly the shooter. Everyone, have a safe holiday season and watch your six...and everything else. Vu, rest in peace, my brother.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

The Thin Blue Line
There is a line the color of the sky on a clear afternoon
There is a line the hue of the ocean on a bright sunny day
There is a line the purest shade of a newborn's eyes awakening for the first time
There is a line that protects us from harm in all we do
whether day or night
There is a line no one can penetrate no one can alleviate
There is a line made of those who choose to follow a calling many do not hear and still more do not comprehend
They choose to walk the path of fear, hate, and mistrust
taken by so few but marked by so many And when one leaves this line they leave a legacy but the line does not break
for the remaining must still protect There may be emptiness
a loss, or sadness but never a hole not in this line
This line that holds the ghosts of the souls who have gone
and the souls of the ghosts who will be
The Thin Blue Line
What a tragedy but we know that he is being surrounded by fallen officers. GOD BLESS YOU ALL
